Manawatū River Leaders Accord

The   Manawatū River Leaders Accord is a high-level commitment by stakeholders who benefit from the Manawatū River to jointly agree on timing and projects that will improve water quality and sustainability within the river.

The accord came about after Horizons Chair Garrick Murfitt invited community, industry and iwi leaders to come together and take ownership of the River and its challenges. After working independently with interest groups for many years Horizon's are now bringing groups together to determine and sign off on the all important actions that will make a difference

Murfitt is quick to say that the hard work is just beginning and the true measure of success will be the healthy river and that will take time and money.

“When the action plan is presented to the community next year it will spark a challenging conversation around who pays to clean up the River and how much this will cost. If we really value the Manawatū River as a source of community pride and mana, it’s going to take time, dedication and money.”
