The Centre for Defence and Security Studies is New Zealand’s only centre for education in security and defence studies. We provide a full range of academic qualifications, from bachelor's degrees to PhD's.
We offer qualifications that equip students with the substantive knowledge and analytical skills to confront the complex security challenges of both today and the future. We also provide students with a rigorous, interdisciplinary education that will contribute to their professional advancement.
Our qualifications explore topics such as traditional and emerging security issues, national security strategy, military operations, border security, terrorism and insurgency, peacekeeping, policing and intelligence.
We are also committed to building a world-class research programme to advance knowledge of defence and security and contribute to national, regional and global conversations.
The Centre was initially set up in 2002 as the Centre for Defence Studies to provide defence education for government agency personnel and interested civilians. Our programmes and focus have since broadened to encompass the wider field of security studies.
A strength of the centre’s staff is that many worked in the defence and security sector before deciding to apply their academic qualifications to an academic environment. This mix of academic and defence and security experience and qualifications ensures that our programmes are relevant to government, business and society.
We are well connected with government agencies in New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region, including the New Zealand Defence Force, the Ministry for Primary Industries and New Zealand Police. Since 2010 we have partnered with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces. We are fully committed to these existing partnerships and to forging further connections.
We are proud to see our graduates represented in agencies and forces in Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Tonga, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, United Kingdom and the USA. They also work in defence and security-related businesses worldwide.
