Scientists explore new frontiers of gene behaviour
(Thursday, May 7, 2009)
Twenty billion bases of DNA sequence and counting - that’s what two Massey molecular biologists will be checking out as they explore the next frontier of cellular space in a bid to understand what makes healthy cells turn bad.
Justin O’Sullivan and Austen Ganley, researchers at Massey’s Institute of Natural Sciences at Albany, recently won second prize in an international science competition giving them access to cutting edge DNA sequencing technology - known as the SOLiD™ 3 System from Applied Biosystems. They are using the technology to observe the complex architecture of genomes for insights into the formation of diseased cells.
The prize will enable them to advance their existing research in a bid to understand the complex interactions that occur between genes and get closer to understanding how diseases such as cancer develop.
