What is the IELTS Preparation Course?

The IELTS intensive preparation course at Massey University is designed to help you achieve the score you need to succeed in your immigration application, professional registration or university entrance.

The courses are suitable for both Academic and General Candidates and cover all four parts of the IELTS test:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

We will help you practice for sitting the test and teach you the methods needed to fulfill your English language potential.

Many candidates have received the score they needed after attending our courses and learning practical IELTS techniques.

Our courses run regularly at the Massey Auckland and Wellington campuses.  We aim to offer small, friendly and comfortable classes with plenty of opportunity to engage directly with our teachers and other participants.  We also offer free parking in all locations.

Richard Scott - Massey University IELTS Tutor

Richard has been teaching English in both Japan and New Zealand for nearly 30 years and has taught a wide variety of students during this time.  Richard is a certified IELTS tutor for Massey University in Auckland.   Outside of work Richard enjoys cooking, travelling and riding his classic Japanese motorcycles.  Richard says the most rewarding part of his job is often witnessing the great progress made by students not only in the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, but also the huge increase in confidence and communicative ability that comes with this. 

Marianne Vacher - Massey university IELTS Tutor

Marianne has many years of experience teaching students in Europe and New Zealand. She currently teaches ESOL at Massey University to International student groups and is a certified tutor for IELTS.  Outside of work, she enjoys playing the guitar, bass and drums with her friends in a band and exploring the countryside on her Honda VFR800 motorbike. Marianne says the best part of her job is helping people gain confidence to communicate in a new language and achieve their goals, this is very rewarding and a challenge that she continues to enjoy.

Stage 3: Results and re-marking

Results - Paper-Based Tests

Your results will be available 13 days after your test.  You can arrange to collect your results or they will be posted to you.  If you would like to collect your results, you must bring your passport as a form of identification.

Results will also be available online.  To access these, you will need to provide your name, passport number, date of birth and the date of your test.

Results - Computer-Delivered Tests

Results are available 5-7 days after your test.  You can arrange to collect your results or they will be posted to you.  If you would like to collect your results, you must bring your passport as a form of identification.

Re-marking / Enquiry on Results (EOR)

If you wish to query your test results, please contact the IELTS test centre within six weeks of your test date to apply for a re-mark. Your request will be sent to a senior examiner based in Australia who will issue the final result.  Please note:

  • This process costs NZD$225.00 (inc GST) and can take 2-4 weeks to process
  • If you request a re-mark, your result cannot decrease.
  • If there is an increase in your results, you will be issued with a new original copy of your results and eligible for a full refund.
  • If there is no change to your results, you will not be eligible for a refund and your original test results form will be returned to you

How do I apply for a refund or transfer?

If you cannot sit the test on the date that you applied for you must advise us as soon as possible.

Time frames for refund.

If you cancel your test within 5 weeks of a test date you will not be refunded.

If you cancel your test before 5 weeks we will refund your test fee minus an NZ$80 administration fee.

If you are sick and cannot attend your booked test date you need to contact your test centre within 1 week of your test date. You will need to provide a medical certificate to receive a test day transfer or partial refund.

If you do not have your passport you will not be able to sit the test and you will not get a refund. 

How do I cancel my test?

To cancel your test, please contact the IELTS test centre as soon as possible.  

How can I see if there are still spaces available?

Please choose your test location.  The dates you can see on this page are currently available for booking.

How do I make a complaint?

If you would like to make a complaint, you need to do so on the day of your test and complete a complaint form which will be provided by the IELTS test supervisor.  Any complaints made after the release of test results will not be accepted.  Any complaint made by a candidate about the administration of the test will be recorded using the complaint form for candidates.  

How much does it cost?

The fee to sit the IELTS test is NZD$385.00 The fee to sit the IELTS test in New Plymouth is NZD$415.00

How long is the test?

Tests are held on Saturday and Thursday.  The Speaking tests can happen on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday morning, and Listening, Reading and Writing happen in the afternoon. Please allow a full day to complete all tests and administration. Breaks will be provided throughout the day.

What do I need to bring?

You must bring your valid, original passport on test day.  We cannot accept any other forms of ID, or copies of your passport. You may also bring a drink in a transparent bottle.  We provide all paper and pens and pencils on test day. It is a long day so you will need to provide for your own lunch.

Can I receive additional copies of my online test results?

The testing fee of NZD$385.00 includes one personal/physical copy of the Test Report Form.

You can have copies of your Test Report Form automatically sent to up to five institutions free of charge when filling in the Recognising Organisations section of your test online registration.

When will I get my results?

You will receive your test results 13 days after the test date. You may also preview your test results online at the same time.


You may have your Test Report Form couriered to you if you are or will be living overseas. This service will incur a fee of $50.

Can my friend collect my Test Results for me?

Yes! But you will need to complete an Authorisation form to confirm your friend can collect the results on your behalf. Please contact the test centre where you did the test.

What if I don't have my passport?

You must have your valid original passport on test day. If you know you will not have your passport please choose a different test date. Any concerns please contact your test centre prior to your test date.
