Dr Philip Steer

Senior Lecturer

Philip completed an MA at Victoria University of Wellington and a PhD at Duke University. He taught for one year at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, before returning to New Zealand in 2010 to join Massey's School of English and Media Studies at the Palmerston North campus. He and his wife have four children and an overgrown garden.

Research Expertise

Research Interests

Philip has published a variety of essays on the relationship between literary form and cultural politics in New Zealand and Britain's nineteenth-century settler empire. In 2011 he was awarded a Marden Fast-Start Grant for a book project exploring the transnational and transcolonial linkages between New Zealand, Britain and Australia in the nineteenth century, provisionally titled Borders of Britishness: Settler Colonialism, Literary Form, and Greater Britain, 1829-1915.
