I work at the intersection of media aesthetics, media history and eco-materialist media studies, with an emphasis on early cinema. My articles on media affect and aesthetics have been published in a number of venues, including Screen, PMLA, Film Quarterly, Textual Practice and Cultural Critique, and my book, The Emotional Life of Postmodern Film, appeared with Routledge in 2016.
My current book project, Cinematic Matters: Film Aesthetics through Animal, Vegetable and Mineral Matter, advances a counter-history of cinematic form, showing how the raw materials of film stock—cellulose, silver and gelatin—informed the emergence and evolution of Hollywood film aesthetics.
