Expertise

Bryan teaches creative writing, with an emphasis on poetry and poetics. The author of two collections of poetry and a collection of short stories, his poems and/or stories have appeared in journals and anthologies in New Zealand, Canada, the UK and the United States. Most recently, his work has won the New Zealand Poetry Society International Poetry Competition, the James Wright Poetry Prize (U.S.) from the Mid-American Review, and the Royal Society of New Zealand Manhire Prize for Creative Science Writing-Fiction.

He is the author as well of a scholarly monograph on science and poetry and has published essays on the contemporary elegy, on the pleasures of opacity in poetry, and on narrative poetry, among others. Bryan is a recipient of both a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching and a national Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
