School of History, Philosophy and Classics

Welcome to the School

Welcome to the School of History, Philosophy and Classics. The School comprises staff with expertise in the following subject areas:

  • Classical Studies
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Religious Studies

The School provides undergraduate majors in History, Philosophy and Classical Studies, and a minor in Religious Studies.  We also offer postgraduate programmes in History, and Philosophy.

  • In addition to our extensive internal programmes on the Manawatu and Albany campuses, we are strongly committed to providing access to our courses to students throughout New Zealand and to New Zealanders resident abroad. Over two-thirds of students study at a distance and we maintain a large and growing number of undergraduate distance learning offerings. In addition our programme of research training and practice at postgraduate level in History, and Philosophy, is available to students at a distance.

The link between our four disciplines is that they are all concerned with asking fundamental questions about humanity, and examining our individual and collective achievements, insights, interactions, fascinations and follies, in the present and in the past.

In studying these disciplines, we develop skills of research, critical thinking, and communication that have both personal value and value to employers.

If you think you may be interested in doing one or more papers in one or more of our disciplines, please don't hesitate to get in touch for further information.
