As author of Aristotle’s Modal Proof, Dr Adrianne Rini is one of a handful of people in the world who can confidently make sense of and appreciate Aristotle’s logic.
She is also a philosopher who is determined to go beyond finding philosophical problems to apply their solutions. Her latest ambition, for example, is to model patterns of human reasoning and link this logic with cognitive science so that it can be applied to technology.
Currently, Dr Rini is working in collaboration with three colleagues to produce A Natural History of Necessity. Their research is based on underpinning where necessity comes from and determining if it is just a feature of human language or some innate part of the world. By looking through human history and examining how philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates have explained it, they hope to tell the story of necessity and explain why we use words the way we do.
Dr Rini’s work is a factor in making New Zealand philosophy a discipline of strength and excitement.
