Postgraduate study

Studying as a postgraduate

Once you have earned your first degree (or if you have sufficient work experience) you can undertake further study in specialist areas through the School of Management’s postgraduate programme of study. This can be through individual papers, or take the form of research-based programmes.

Postgraduate study programmes offered are:

Bachelor with Honours

Bachelor of Business Studies with Honours BBS(Hons)

The Bachelor of Business Studies with Honours BBS(Hons) is for students with a BBS or an equivalent commerce degree from a New Zealand university, who wish to acquire specialist advanced training in the same major. It consists of taught papers and a piece of supervised research. It can be undertaken in the following subjects:

  • Business Information Systems
  • Human Resource Management
  • Management

Postgraduate diplomas

Postgraduate diplomas provide advanced education in specialist business areas. You must already have an undergraduate degree to enrol in these courses. Postgraduate diplomas consist of taught papers, although a project in an area of interest may be included. They are normally completed in one year of full-time study or by part-time study.

Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDipBusAdmin)

This is the most flexible diploma offered by the School of Management. Regulations allow you to either choose a specific topic to study (see below) or you can mix and match a variety of papers. It is one of the School’s most popular postgraduate qualifications.

Postgraduate Diploma in Health Service Management (PGDipHSM)

Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Management (PGDipSportMgt)

Masters

A Masters is an advanced qualification for students who have completed a relevant Bachelor degree. The programme combines the study of advanced theory with research in a specialised field of business. Length of study is usually around two years full-time.

Master of Business Studies (MBS)

The Master of Business Studies is for those who have previously studied business through a Bachelor of Business Studies or BBS(Hons). It can be undertaken in the following subjects:

  • Management
  • Business Information Systems
  • Human Resource Management
  • Sport Business Management

Master of Management (MMgt)

The Master of Management is for those who have not studied business before. It can be undertaken in the following subjects:

  • Business Information Systems
  • Health Service Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • International Business
  • Management
  • Occupational Safety and Health
  • Sports Business Management

Doctorates

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest supervised degree available at Massey University. A doctorate is for candidates with a strong academic background. It consists of a supervised research project resulting in a thesis. A full-time doctorate takes three to four years to complete or up to six years part-time.
