Support Group Facilitator

Clinical Psychology Service

Massey's Health Conditions Service has a Support Group Facilitator who works with health professionals and community workers. Our facilitator, Dr Sara Joice, maintains local peer-led support groups (PLSG) for long-term conditions across the district health board area.

Support groups enable people facing similar health challenges to help each other improve self–management of their conditions through sharing experiences and knowledge. Participation in a support group is a really effective method of enabling people to self-manage their long-term-condition and increase their health literacy.

Referrals

Health professionals or social workers can refer individuals to a support group.

Research project

The MidCentral District Health Board has commissioned the Massey University Health Conditions Service to conduct an 18-month project to explore the feasibility of developing the facilitator role. The aims of the project are to:

1) Raise awareness of the role to:

  • PLSGs in the DHB geographical area
  • healthcare professionals working in long-term health conditions

2) Encourage and support:

  • development of new groups
  • maintenance of established groups
  • attendance/participation membership with a focus on Maori and Pasifika.

The project will be completed in January 2017. If you would like more information please contact Dr Sara Joice.
