Facilities for Postgraduate Students in the School of People, Environment and Planning
Internal graduate students are well catered for throughout their studies. There are a number of postgraduate study rooms as well as a common lunch and tea room. Rooms provide either shared or individual study space, shared computers, internet access and access to a printer. The University also offers dedicated postgraduate computer centres.
The School of People, Environment and Planning provides specialist equipment such as physical geography laboratories, which are equipped for palynology and sedimentology, and access to field equipment. We also keep excellent records of completed Masters and Doctoral theses, many of which are available in the Massey Library.
We host regular seminars showcasing current staff and student research from within the School. Leading academics from Massey, visiting scholars from other universities and industry professionals often feature as guest speakers at these seminars. We also offer postgraduate workshops and meetings and actively encourage our vibrant and exciting student community.

Graduate Research Fund
The School of People, Environment and Planning provides a contestable Graduate Research Fund for postgraduate students completing a thesis of 100 credits or more. This fund is available to internal and distance learning postgraduate students.
PEP Graduate Research Fund grants are intended as a contribution to the support of research costs incurred in thesis/dissertation projects at Masters or PhD level. The applicant’s thesis/dissertation project must therefore comprise at least 100 academic points. Application should be made by the student directly to the PEP Graduate Studies Committee and will require the support of the student’s Chief Supervisor.
Applications may be made for assistance with: small items of equipment, equipment hire, consumables and travel, including conference attendance and travel and other research costs. Consumables may include tapes, photographic film and videotapes, purchase of specialist materials (though not items that should be in the library), survey costs and other similar items. Travel may include fares, accommodation and subsistence. Research or field assistance, transcription costs and data entry charges will not normally be funded, though exceptional cases may be considered. Costs of thesis production will not be covered. Consumables, such as photocopying and printing, will be covered under an automatic resource minima grant and may not be applied for.
For more information about the graduate research fund, contact your supervisor or the School Administrator.
Disatnce Learning Students
One of Massey’s strengths is its distance learning programme and a large number of our postgraduate students study by distance learning. In addition to having access to the on-campus resources when you visit us (as outlined in the resource minima above), we also provide distance learning students with comprehensive study guides for taught papers and regular contact with staff by email, phone, or Stream. Many of our taught papers have contact courses, which provide a chance for face-to-face interaction with staff and other students. Thesis students normally spend 3-4 weeks per year on campus to make use of the Library and other excellent resources and to meet with their supervisors.
If you do plan to study by distance learning we encourage you to join our School’s postgraduate email list and extend an open invitation to attend any of the seminars we run when you are in Palmerston North. For more information about our seminar series or the postgraduate email list, contact your supervisor or the School Administrator.
