Masters Degrees
A Masters degree is a qualification for students who have completed a Bachelors degree and want to pursue postgraduate study and in-depth research in a specific field. A Masters degree usually requires two years of full-time study, however the first year may be waived if a suitable qualification has previously been completed.
Our School offers three Masters degrees:
Master of Arts (MA)
The MA is suitable for students who have a BA in a particular subject area and want a qualification that builds on the analytical, conceptual and research skills that are begun at the undergraduate level. This Masterate involves a combination of 700-level and/or 800-level papers and a thesis, which is normally a substantial piece of written work. It is offered in the following subject areas:
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The MPhil is used when students have a first, undergraduate degree in a subject other than the one they are studying at postgraduate level. It usually involves a combination of taught papers followed by a thesis. The MPhil is offered in the following subject areas:
- Development Studies
- Geography
- Geographic Information Systems
- Museum Studies
- Politics
- Social Anthropology
- Sociology
- Women’s Studies
Master of Resource and Environmental Planning (MRP)
This professional Masterate is available to students without a prior planning degree as well as BRP graduates and involves a combination of taught papers and a thesis. If you have not completed an undergraduate degree and would still like to study towards a Master of Resource and Environmental Planning (MRP), there are alternative pathways to study part time and achieve your objectives.
Always consult the University Calendar for degree regulations.
