Sharon is interested in volunteerism, social media, health, and development, and her current research is on volunteer tourism in Fiji. This expands on her PhD research on the networking of volunteer organisations in Honduras following the 2009 coup. In 2016 she completed a post-doctoral fellowship exploring community perceptions of corporate community development initiatives of mining and tourism multinationals in the Pacific . Linking these research themes is an interest in new and alternative actors in development, and in contemporary development processes and globalisation.
These themes are also represented in her teaching, which focuses on development and inequality, and global citizenship.
