Dr Cheyne is actively involved in research in a range of fields including:

  • Transportation policy and planning (see for example http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/research/reports/419/index.html funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency’s 2008/09 Research Programme)
  • Local government and local governance reforms including municipal consolidation (e.g. creation of Auckland Council and related developments in New Zealand).
  • Public participation in local authority annual, strategic and resource & environmental planning processes
  • Amenity migration and coastal development
  • The integration of social, economic, environmental and cultural aspects of well-being
  • Governance, participation and representation; and local government funding
  • Connecting democracy and welfare state institutions (as part of University of Auckland led team that is a partner in the RECON project funded by the European Commission’s Sixth Framework Programme: see http://www.reconproject.eu/projectweb/portalproject/AbstractRECONwp1126.html )
  • Research on New Zealanders' knowledge about, and interaction with, local governemnt; local government's responsiveness to Maori and young people
