Online learning at Massey University

  • Introduction
  • How to find out if your paper has an online component

Introduction

As part of your study at Massey University you may have access to a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to support you in your studies.

If you have studied at Massey University previously you may be familiar with WebCT which is the VLE we had used for a number of years. Since the beginning of 2011 the University has been using our new VLE to enhance your learning and teaching.

The new environment is called Stream.

Example of Stream

An increasing number of papers are integrating Stream with conventional learning resources to enrich the distance learning experience. You can access Stream by using standard Internet browsers such as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Stream is your online learning community. We want distance students to feel part of a real class and Stream allows you to share and exchange ideas with fellow students and the paper coordinator. A large number of the papers now support online conversations using web-based discussion forums. Depending on the paper, you can also access the latest news in your subject, study notes, recent journal articles, podcasts, online presentations, interactive exercises and activities, and tests and quizzes.

You are encouraged to make regular and focused use of these environments and other internet resources in your learning. Massey University is committed to providing an increasing number of online learning services.

How to find out if your paper has an online component

The online component for each paper is indicated on the paper details pages within the Programmes and papers web pages. You can view a short demonstration of how to find a paper's online component. The online component description within the paper information is your guide to how the VLE will be utilised. To find out what the components mean see online components definitions.

If the paper indicates no online component, you may wish to check with the paper coordinator to see when the adoption of Stream is planned. You should also keep in mind that paper coordinators are using online learning in different ways to support distance learning. Some online resources are available at the beginning of the semester, whereas others may be introduced to you later in the semester. If you have any questions about the online component then you should contact the paper coordinator.
