Centre for Teaching and Learning Assignment Pre-reading Service

Please allow at least 3 working days for the turnaround of assignments submitted to this service.

About the service

  • This free service for distance and first-year students offers you an opportunity to send your draft assignment to CTL Writing Consultants for review and advice.
  • You can submit 2 assignments to the service per semester.
  • We will dedicate 1 hour (undergraduate students) or 1½ hours (postgraduate students) to your review
  • Allow 3 working days for assignment turnaround. (The service is closed on public holidays, university holidays and over the Christmas break.)

What we will need from you

Completion of the Online assignment submission form (see below) which includes:

  • Full details of the assignment topic or question.
  • Relevant instructions.
  • Assignment due date.
  • Your questions or concerns about your draft.

What we will do

  • Provide feedback and advice about any difficulties we identify within your draft.
  • Respond to your questions with relevant information as to how these matters can be overcome.
  • Comment on one or more of the following features: focus, style, presentation and referencing.

What we do not do

  • Identify every mistake or error in your draft. This is not a proof-reading service.
  • Respond more than once to the same assignment.
  • Respond to more than two assignments per student per semester.
  • Indicate a grade for your assignment.
  • Comment on matters directly relating to course or subject content.

Who can use this service

  • All distance (extramural) students.
  • All students in their first year of study. If you have not yet passed 120 credits of courses, you are eligible.
  • We do not review full research courses (eg theses, practicums, and research reports). Contact the Centre for Teaching and Learning for alternative types of support.

How do you submit an assignment?

How do we respond?

  • You will receive your assignment back via the Academic Writing and Learning Support Stream site (and get an automated email notifying you when it is ready). It will be marked with comments and suggestions.
  • You will also receive a Word document summarising the consultant’s feedback.
  • Note that we do not provide a fully corrected draft.
  • The Writing Consultant may also attach appropriate material which will help you address identified problems.

Questions

Student reviews

  • "Thank you so very very much for all of your feedback. It is worth 'gold' to me."
  • "A big thank you for the amazing thorough feedback given. I thoroughly recommend anyone to use the service.  It's not only helped me with my particular assignment, but has alerted me to some habits/writing styles that I have adopted and should avoid- and so has helped me with my academic writing in general."
  • "Over the last 3 years I think you have checked most of my assignments. I look back at  the first ones and can see the improvement I have made with your expert advice and support. It amazes me I have an A average, and I know it is directly attributed to the support you have given me, I could not have done this with out you. Many many thanks."
  • "I reworked the entire assignment after rereading your draft review comments… My lecturer just wrote to advise it was the best in the class and an “A”."
  • "Wanted to say thanks... I ended up getting 85% and much of that was due to having someone help me to structure my argument better. Pretty stoked, as written communication has not been something I have received good grades for previously.  I have gained a lot from your time and effort."
  • "Incredibly prompt, thorough, thoughtful and helpful.... I'm very grateful... to this service... the support I've received as a new post grad distance student this year has been well in excess of my expectations - thank you all very much!"
