As a student at Massey University, you have access to a wide range of study support services and resources. 

Centres for Teaching and Learning

The Centres for Teaching and Learning provide a range of free services that help you to study effectively and develop your academic skills. Services include:

  • Consultations with learning advisors, mentors and peer tutors.
  • Introductory assignment writing and study skills programmes, held before or at the start of each semester.
  • Free seminars on assignment writing and academic skills development, held during each semester.
  • A range of diverse programmes and services tailored to meet the specific learning needs of Māori, Pacific, postgraduate, distance and international students.
  • The publication of learning resources on topics such as essay and report writing, referencing, time management, memory skills, making a presentation, and preparation for exams.
  • They also respond to requests for academic support.

We provide a portfolio of academic learning support services to help you succeed in your university study. Materials are developed by experts and are designed to enhance your reading, writing, numeracy skills. General study skills resources such as time management, note taking, and memory skills are also available.

Assignment resources and services

Assignment Pre-reading Service

The Assignment Pre-reading Service offers distance and first year internal students the opportunity to submit their assignments to our Centre for Teaching and Learning Writing Consultants to read and comment on before you formally submit your assignment for marking.

Assignment Planning Calculator

The Assignment Planning Calculator provides you with a recommended timeline with a list of steps to follow.

Academic Writing Booklet

The Academic Writing Booklet contains useful advice on how to write university assignments and can be downloaded from the Online Writing and Learning Link (OWLL) web pages. Please email the Centre for Teaching and Learning for more information.

Writing Consultants at the Manawatū library

Distance students who are able to visit the Manawatū campus in Palmerston North are welcome to contact our Writing Consultants. The Writing Consultants can answer your questions about academic writing and study skills or give you feedback on your assignments structure, focus, paragraph structure, flow, presentation, use of sources, and referencing.

No appointment needed but appointments are available.

Writing Consultants are available on Level 1 of the Manawatū Library during semesters 1 and 2 at the following times:

Monday to Thursday: 9:30am to 9pm

Friday: 9:30am to 4pm

Request for academic support

As a distance student you have access to an online request for academic support service. This allows you to ask our student learning consultants for help and advice. There is usually a 24 hour turnaround time. To make a request complete our online Academic Support Request Form.

Academic Q&A

You can ask about academic writing and/or study skills in the Academic Q+A forum.

Distance Library Service

Massey University has a Distance Library Service with over 870,000 books and countless journals and articles. You can browse the catalogue online, request books via our delivery service, delivered free of charge to your mailbox. Services are also available for students studying outside of New Zealand, however, additional fees may apply.
