Aegrotat consideration (missed fixed time and place assessment)

Who can apply?

You can apply if you have been unable to attend a scheduled assessment because of critical personal circumstances or illness that arose very recently.

It is unlikely that your application will be considered if you did not attend because:

  • you had the date wrong, slept in, or missed the bus.
  • you had a long-standing circumstance or illness.
  • you had exam-related stress or were tired because you were studying
  • you had a common cold or similar everyday problem

How do I apply?

How to apply if you were unwell:

  1. You must visit a registered health professional as soon as possible.
    1. You should preferably go while you are still sick so that they can certify that you were ill.
    2. You must see them within 7 days of the assessment.
    3. You should take a copy of this form for them to sign as evidence of your illness.
AEG/IP: Health and Counselling Form (133 KB)

What happens to my application?

Your application is first assessed by administrative staff to check it meets the rules. It will be declined if it:

  • is not submitted on time
  • does not contain independent evidence verifying your circumstances
  • does not apply to an assessment that is held at a fixed time and place
  • applies to an assessment worth less than 10% of your overall grade
  • relates to circumstances that are not considered critical or unavoidable, or that are long standing.

Your application is then sent to academic staff who determine whether your mark or result can be changed. Whether your result can be changed depends on how well you did in other assessments during the year in that course, so the application may not be considered until the end of the academic year. Your performance in other courses is not considered. In some cases you may be offered the opportunity to sit an alternative assessment to make up for the one you missed.

How will I know the result of my application?

You will receive a notification of the outcome through the portal. This might not be until the end of the semester examination period.

What can I do if there is a problem with my application or I disagree with the outcome?

If you believe that you have sustained academic disadvantage as a result of Aegrotat consideration, you may appeal once in writing to the Academic Board or its delegate (normally the Chief Examiner of the relevant College) within 4 weeks of the release of the final grade for the course.
