162.101 Biology of Cells (15 credits)

An introduction to eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure and function, and the chemistry of life. The flow of information within cells and transmission of genetic information to progeny in cell division. A description of cellular mechanisms for creating genetic diversity and the control of gene expression. An introduction to molecular genetics and genomics.

Expected prior learning Requirements help

  • Passes in the following NCEA standards are highly recommended: level 1, AS90927 (microorganisms); level 2, AS91153 (practical investigation), AS91156 (cellular processes), AS91157 (genetic variation), AS91159 (gene expression); level 3, AS91601 (practical investigation), AS91607 (genetic transfer) or a pass in 162.103.
