What is Academic Standing?

Academic Standing is a system designed to assist you to understand how you are progressing in your studies. Massey University has high expectations and wants students to pass 100% of their courses. Academic Standing enables the University to identify and acknowledge your excellent progress, as well as recognise when you need extra assistance to perform at your best.

After each enrolment period (Semester One, Semester Two/Double Semester, or  Summer School), your Academic Standing is calculated and assigned. There are three types of Academic Standing you can receive:

  • University Standing: this standing relates to study at Massey overall, and has no relationship to progression within specific programmes of study
  • Qualification Standing: if you are enrolled in a qualification with specific progression or exclusion rules and fail to meet the requirements, you will receive a Qualification Standing of Excluded. This only applies to a small number of qualifications, but it is important to know if it applies to yours.
  • Course Standing: if you fail a course twice, you will receive a Course Standing of Excluded. This can apply to any course, from any enrolment period.

Your Academic Standing is calculated based on your performance in the most recent enrolment period with some contribution from your performance in previous enrolment periods (see below for criteria).

Note: for most undergraduate courses: 1 course = 15 credits. For some practicum and many postgraduate courses: 1 course = 30 or 45 credits.
