What is it like?

You’ll learn about a range of disciplines including body function and movement and training principles, which lay the foundations for enhancing health and wellbeing in the general and compromised populations, as well as in athletic conditioning.

The sport and exercise practicum will give you experience working with individuals with various conditions in a real-world setting. This will test your fitness assessment, exercise technique and programming skills.

Wide range of courses

You will take a set of compulsory courses common to all the BSpEx majors, then select courses specific to Exercise Prescription. You have room for four optional courses (electives). Electives can be taken from any other undergraduate degree programme. Many students take electives related to sport, such as ergonomics, sport law, sport biomechanics and exercise physiology.

A good fit if you:

  • Are passionate about sport and exercise
  • Are keen to build a healthier world with a sport-focused degree
  • Want hands-on experience

Fitness Manager - CityFitness, Palmerston North

“The practical aspects in the second and third years of the degree help me every day at work…”

I always participated in sport when I was growing up, and in my final year at school I knew a career in the sporting industry was for me. Furthering my education in sport at university would be the best way to set myself up for this.

I now work for CityFitness (the largest gym chain in New Zealand) as Fitness Manager of the Palmerston North club. Every day I lead my team (consisting of 16 personal trainers) as they change the lives of hundreds of individuals. On top of this I still train a handful of my own clients and regularly travel to Wellington to deliver health and fitness courses to new CityFitness Personal Trainers.

The aspects of the Massey Sport and Exercise Degree which stood out for me were:

  • the practical aspects in the second and third years of the degree - this has help me every day at work
  • the crossover of courses from one major to another - I majored in Exercise Prescription and Training, but I also completed management courses which have been invaluable to me since progressing into the role of Fitness Manager.

A career as a personal trainer with Cityfitness can be a realistic goal for any individual who graduates from Massey with a Sport and Exercise degree.

The BSpEx (Exercise Prescription) will equip you for a challenging and rewarding career helping people achieve their goals through exercise. The combination of general, compromised health and athlete prescription is an excellent preparation for a career in the health, fitness and sport industry.

Our graduates have gained successful employment in a full variety of areas including:

  • Clinical exercise testing
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Green prescriptions
  • Personal training
  • Health promotion
  • High performance sport
