What is it like?

Language is part our everyday lives, yet how much do we actually understand about how it works? Linguistics is the study of language, its structure and meaning, how it is learnt and used, and what this says about who we are and where we come from.

Linguistics broadens your understanding of how language works in your own society, and it also provides understanding of concepts and structures in languages and cultures beyond your own. You will identify core similarities in language and communication, two activities that define us as humans. It appeals especially to students who enjoy learning languages or have a curiosity about language.

Language is vital to human communication. The study of linguistics helps you understand the development of language and can lead to an array of careers, including those in the list below.

  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Journalism
  • Language teaching
  • Media
  • Speech therapy
