“This is the only university programme in New Zealand that prepares students for certification as an OHS professional. It’s also unique because it includes ergonomics - the design of workplaces and jobs that meet human needs while enhancing system performance…”
I am passionate about integrating occupational health and safety into management and development of workplaces and empowering OHS practitioners and worker health and safety representatives to influence businesses and organisations to establish healthy and safe workplaces.
For 30 years, I have been passionate about occupational health and safety (OHS). I want to design workplaces that do not damage workers’ health. One of the events that led me on my journey was a strike by scaffolding workers. Three of them were fired because they refused to work on scaffolding on a day with ice, snow and strong winds. I wanted to help prevent injuries and illnesses and empower workers to stand up for the right to operate in healthy, safe workplaces.
OHS focuses on preventing injuries and harm to people in their workplaces. But it’s also about creating healthy workplaces so workers have healthy lives. OHS includes ergonomics and human factors. These help to improve business performance.
Studying with us, you will learn why it’s important to establish national standards and regulations, create guidance for businesses and educate and train managers and workers to identify health and safety hazards, and ways to manage and control them so that workers can go to work and arrive home healthy.
