Rehabilitation is a dynamic process designed to restore loss of function, independence, or role following the onset of a significant disability, incarceration, or recovery from addictive behaviours.
Rehabilitation is a philosophy and approach rather than a discipline. In fact, rehabilitation is generally provided by a multidisciplinary team which may include physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, counsellors, case-managers, vocational evaluators and advisors, placement specialists, and others.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Rehabilitation is oriented toward graduates seeking careers in rehabilitation. Many graduates have first degrees in a professional field such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, or nursing.
Students may seek to continue to practice in their professional area as part of a rehabilitation team. Others seek entry into the field as rehabilitation counsellors, case managers, vocational advisors, or specialists in the area of rehabilitation of the visually impaired.
