What is it like?

Part of being a manager is being able to be a nimble, quick thinker, able to analyse situations effectively, consider priorities and make great decisions, often under pressure.

These are the sort of skills you will learn in Massey University’s Bachelor of Business (Management).

A new way of learning

Studying management at Massey will give you a great grounding in the latest management principles. But the most unique part of your study in management at Massey is the way we teach you to think.

We’ll teach you to think independently and analytically, helping you understand how to use the information you have at hand, to solve issues that you face.

This critical approach forms the basis of our management programme. You will study areas including:

  • The latest research outcomes and strategies for decision making and problem solving
  • Organisational design
  • Long-term business strategies
  • Control systems
  • Culture and politics in organisations
  • Management information
  • The constraints for managers of national and international environments

This will help you understand current management theories and strategies. We then help you put it into context, encouraging discussion with your lecturers, tutors and fellow students to understand the realities of business today.

Marketing Coordinator - KiwiRail Scenic Journeys

“I really valued the broad foundation of Massey’s business degree…”

I finished my studies at Massey in 2012 and began work at KiwiRail pretty much straight away, in January of the following year.

I’m part of the marketing team at KiwiRail Scenic. We operate three long distance scenic train services (the TranzAlpine, Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific) and aim to be a ‘must-do’ tourism experience in New Zealand.

We have a small marketing team, so my role is all encompassing! I’m responsible for supporting our marketing manager and ensuring we meet deadlines, have strong briefs, produce quality work, have efficient planning in place and ensure all core marketing functions are addressed on a day to day basis. I work closely with colleagues throughout the business, as well as coordinate work and relationships with external suppliers.

My days include tasks and projects across brand management, website and social media management, media and advertising, product development, collateral design, promotions, communications, sales support and more. It’s a definite case of ‘no two days are ever the same’. A small team (and a great boss) allows me to contribute to strategy and planning as well as coordinate the actual execution of campaigns.

My degree enabled me to gain my foot in the door to the industry, and the opportunities provided by Massey allowed me gain valuable skills and workplace experience to support this. The combination of academic achievement and work experience (particularly through the College of Business Internship program) gave me an advantage over other grads in a competitive job market.

I really valued the broad foundation of Massey’s Business degree - being able to gain basic knowledge across core business functions before deciding which path to specialise in. Papers throughout my degree were diverse; some challenging, creative, practical - but all useful in providing essential knowledge and skills for my career.

I thoroughly enjoyed my three years at Massey - a great learning environment, plenty of academic choices, the friendly Palmerston North campus and easy student living.
