What is it like?

In Massey University’s Master of Business Studies you will combine study of advanced theory with research in a specialised field of business to give you a career advantage.

A Master of Business Studies will give you the skills you need to progress your career, or continue to further study.

Learn from leading business experts

The Massey Business School is one of the country’s leading and largest business schools - it is ranked among the top two per cent of business schools globally and is AACSB accredited.

Massey University’s business and management studies rank in the top 250 (by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings). We are also ranked in the top 150 universities worldwide for business administration programmes by the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

You will learn from well-respected academics and business experts, gaining an international perspective on the major that you choose.

Complete in a shorter time

This master’s qualification offers the same rigorous and prestigious programme as other master’s degrees, yet can be completed in only three semesters (180 credits), or one and half years.

What will you learn?

A master’s is a rigorous, challenging, rewarding and exciting programme of study. Your study will focus on your chosen major, but help you put this speciality into the context of other business disciplines - reflecting the reality of today’s business environment.

To succeed at a senior level in business, or academia, you must be able to communicate your work and findings effectively.

The Master of Business Studies programme will develop your oral and written communication skills to the level expected of senior business leaders.

You will learn the processes and disciplines involved in high-level in-depth research and how to apply them to business. As part of your study you will complete and present a comprehensive written report on an independent research topic

Relevant learning

Massey’s programmes are research-led. The Master of Business Studies not only draws on the latest business research but also has a focus on real-world learning. We utilise our relationships with industry and help you draw on experience you may have to give your learning context and relevance to the real world.

Flexibility of study

The MBS offers a flexible study plan comprising of subject specialisation courses and research-focused courses.

Why postgraduate study?

Postgraduate study is hard work but hugely rewarding and empowering. The workload of the Master of Business Studies replicates the high-pressure environment of senior workplace roles and high-level research. Our experts are there to guide but if you have come from undergraduate study, you will find that postgraduate study demands more in-depth and independent study.

Not just more of the same

Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. It takes you to a new level in knowledge and expertise especially in planning and undertaking research.

A good fit if you:

  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree (or bachelor’s degree with honours) in business with good grades
  • Are interested in a postgraduate qualification with a research component
  • Wish to progress your business career into a more senior level, or
  • Would like to continue on to further study such as a PhD

BBS/BSc Conjoint degree - Master of Business Studies (Management)
Graduated in 2016
Market, Supply & Demand Analyst - New Vehicle Department, Toyota

“I really love to learn. This master’s was a great experience that has improved me in all aspects of life - work, home and friends. I thought I was already pretty good at time management but I learnt how important it really was while doing my master’s…”

I lived in the UK for two years after school, then enrolled in a BBS at Massey focusing on sport management. After some elective papers I realised I really enjoyed science and that I was more interested in small business, so I moved to a conjoint BBS/BSc degree in those areas.

I personally loved my experience of study.  I enjoy to learn and found that Massey offered a wide variety of subjects and papers to choose from. I loved my study, the conjoint degree gave me an opportunity to keep my study diverse.
I had some great experiences - including joining SIFE - a student run business group that generated not-for-profit entrepreneurial projects. I also helped out at NZ Business Week in 2012 and volunteering there led me to a role at Toyota NZ.

I joined the company as a New Vehicle Pricing Analyst (which involves negotiation of new vehicle pricing with our parent company) and now I have just moved to become a Market, Supply & Demand Analyst.

My master’s was completed while I was working full time at Toyota New Zealand.

The MBS has been useful in the workplace, particularly via the critical thinking/writing and research skills that I acquired during the process.

Studying and working full time was a challenge sometimes. You have to sacrifice a lot of your weekends (not all of them though!). It’s important to maintain a balance of work, study, and rest and to find time for things like exercise.
I enjoyed meeting new people in my papers who were sharing a similar journey to me and working closely with my supervisor. One of the things I found most useful was joining study groups for each paper, you get to connect with people, it gives you a better understanding of the content and also challenges your thinking.

I don’t have any children so I really respect and am amazed by women who complete a master’s degree while working full time and managing a family life.
