Massey’s BA (Media Studies) is an exciting discipline that will prepare you for future challenges in an information-rich society. Media studies analyses the production, consumption and content of a range of media including film, social media, television, popular music and smartphones. You will explore the formal characteristics of these media and their social, cultural, political and economic implications.
Media studies is taught through an innovative programme that blends theory with creative practice. The skills you will develop with this major are versatile and highly sought-after in many careers, with digital media literacy becoming increasingly important across all sectors.
You’ll become a media-shaper who can do as well as think. Your lecturers are internationally published experts in their fields, which collectively span the breadth of contemporary media studies. We use media theories both as a springboard for exploring a range of media forms and to guide you through the practice of creating your own media products such as short films and documentaries.
We offer you access to the latest in digital technology through our new state-of-the-art facilities and online learning system. You’ll have opportunities for multi-modal, hands-on learning that reflects the latest developments in media practice to give you skills relevant to today’s industry.
At the heart of our programme are the study and creation of a variety of media forms. We consider different aspects of the media and their relationships to the historical, social and cultural contexts in which they occur. You’ll be encouraged to use lateral-thinking skills to understand the media world and participate in shaping its future.
“The knowledge I picked up on these papers enabled me to now run my own film production business…”
A Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media Studies enabled me to develop knowledge in the areas that I was truly passionate about while also providing me with a meaningful and useful tertiary education.
I was also given the chance to get hold of a camera on practical media papers. The knowledge I picked up on these papers enabled me to now run my own film production business, without having to attend a specialist filmmaking school. Howie Shoot Pictures specialises in promotional videos for small businesses, or not-for-profits. My clients will often come to me with a video purpose or goal, and I take it from there – writing and interviewing, creating a schedule and narrative structure, then shooting and editing.
However, looking back it was the versatility of the BA that I continue to find most valuable. In my current position as Communications Coordinator for the Wellington City Mission, the papers in communications, te reo, business studies, politics and especially English (my minor) are particularly relevant. Also, throughout my degree I learnt how to present and structure an original argument in a professional manner – so much so, that it is second nature to me now. I am responsible for, or have a role in, most official communications the Wellington City Mission has with the public, including our quarterly newsletter and campaign and appeal literature.
My achievement of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies is the reason I have two meaningful and exciting careers.
