What is it like?

From soil science to ecology, resource economics to geography, the Bachelor of Environmental Management (Hons) welcomes students from a wide range of disciplines.

What will I study?

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the nexus between the natural and the socioeconomic environments. You will develop skills on how to reconcile societal values, needs and attitudes with the need to maintain the integrity of ecological systems.

The core courses of your study cover the following modules:

  • environmental economics
  • environmental policy
  • literature reviews
  • environmental anthropology
  • project evaluation

The Bachelor of Environmental Management (Honours) is an intensive year-long qualification and also a great pathway to a research-based qualification such as a PhD or masters degree.

Next steps

Once you have completed your BEnvMgmt (Hons) you can choose to continue on to complete a postgraduate diploma. Courses available to complete the PGDipEnvMgmt are drawn from an extensive selection of offerings from Massey University’s Colleges of Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and the areas of finance and economics.

Demand for people with environment management skills is growing in New Zealand and overseas. Organisations outside of those directly related to environmental issues are also increasingly recognising the need to have expertise in this area.

Your lecturers maintain excellent relationships with key organisations and these relationships give our students networking opportunities for future careers. Massey environmental management graduates are highly sought-after by employers, with the majority of our students having employment before they graduate.

Nearly 30% of our graduates are employed in research, universities or district or city councils. Many are also in private consultancies and business.

The average annual salary for a graduate from our programme is over NZ$80,000.

Fast track to your masters

You may find that this honours degree piques your interest in environmental management. If so, you can go on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management, and you may be able to complete an additional 60-credit to gain a master’s degree.
