Entry requirements

International students

Before enrolling for the Foundation Certificate, a student shall have:

  • received a conditional offer of place to their next programme of study (conditional on English language proficiency only); and

achieved a 5.0 IELTS (no band less than 5.0)Domestic students

Before enrolling New Zealand citizens and permanent residents who are under 20 years of age, willl have:

  • academic admission to their next programme of study; and
  • a minimum 5.0 IELTS in each band or equivalent Adult admission is available to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who do not have the entrance qualifications above, but who will be at least 20 years of age by the final date for acceptance of late enrolment applications for the enrolment period in which study commences.

Foundation Certificate in Academic English structure

Pathway

Successful completion of the Foundation Certificate in Academic English (DEEP) requires passes in all four courses and achievement of the overall grade required for admission to the next programme of study, as stated in the letter of offer.

These regulations should be read in conjunction with all other Statutes and Regulations of the University including the General Regulations for Undergraduate Degrees, Undergraduate Diplomas, Undergraduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Graduate Certificates

Courses

The Foundation Certificate in Academic English (DEEP) is comprised of four courses designed to develop the academic reading, writing and language skills necessary for successful undergraduate study.

To successfully complete the certificate you must pass the following courses and achieve the grade required for admission to the next programme of study:

192.020 Academic Reading and Writing I
192.021 Language Skills for Academic Study I
192.022 Academic Reading and Writing II
192.023 Language Skills for Academic Study II

Students must pass 192.020 before enrolling in 192.022, and must pass 192.021 before enrolling in 192.023.

How much will it cost?

We can't tell you the exact cost until you have chosen your courses, as the tuition fees you pay each year vary depending on the courses you choose. There will also be compulsory non-tuition fees you have to pay in addition to your tuition fees. For some courses there may be other charges for things such as study resources, software, trips and contact workshops.
