Entry requirements

Please see the entry requirements for the Master of Education.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in early childhood/early years education or any other degree from a New Zealand university and an appropriate professional qualification.

Applicants who do not hold an early childhood/early years or primary teaching qualification, should include with their enrolment application a statement on equivalent teaching experience with young children and how previous academic qualification/background is relevant to the study of early years education.

Along with certified copies of academic transcripts and certificates, you may be required to provide evidence of sufficient background experience. If you hold any other Bachelors degree or equivalent and have no professional qualification in teaching you will need to provide a copy of your curriculum vitae (CV) to support your application.

Requirements

This qualification will carry the award of Distinction if completed at a superior standard (equivalent to First Class Honours) or Merit (equivalent to Second Class Honours, Division One) within 18 months of first enrolling for full-time study or within four years of first enrolling for part-time study. Maximum completion timeframe for the 180 credit Master of Education is five years.

Students admitted with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education completing a 120 credit Master of Education must complete within one year of first enrolling for full-time study or within three years of first enrolling for part-time study to be eligible for the award of Merit/Distinction. The maximum completion timeframe for the 120 credit Master of Education is four years.

Students that have been admitted with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (and are ineligible to surrender this qualification) shall complete at least 120 credits, comprising:

At least 30 credits at 700-level, including at least 15 credits (Coursework Pathway) or 30 credits (Research Pathway) of research methods course(s) as listed in the Schedule for the Qualification and Part Two as specified in the Schedule.

Coursework (Professional Inquiry) pathway

Students must complete at least 90 credits from this subject schedule. An additional 30 credits may be selected from the Elective Schedule for the MEd or any of the other subject schedules (including Early Years).

All students must complete one 15 credit research methods course and the 45 credits Professional Inquiry course. The focus of the Professional Inquiry should be in the subject specialisation area.

It is recommended that the subject courses are completed first. You should then complete your research methods course before undertaking the professional inquiry.

To progress to Part Two students must achieve a minimum B grade average in the first 120 credits of courses.

Research (Thesis) pathway

Students must complete 60 credits from the subject schedule, two 15 credit research methods courses (listed above), and a 90 credit Thesis. The focus of the Thesis should be in the relevant subject area.

It is recommended that the subject courses are completed first. You should then complete your research methods course before undertaking the professional inquiry.

To progress to Part Two students must achieve a minimum B+ grade average in the first 90 credits of courses.
