Entry requirements

There will be no new enrolments taken for this programme (subject to Education Council approval).

To assume a place within a teacher education programme you must be selected, gain entry into the University and gain admission to the programme. Entry requirements are detailed on the regulations button.

In addition to the selection criteria outlined below, before enrolment in the Te Aho Tātairangi: Bachelor of Teaching Māori Medium/Diploma in Māori Education you will need to have:

  • meet the standard criteria for entry to University;
  • demonstrated a high level of competency in Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga;
  • demonstrated competence in literacy and numeracy (including but not limited to English) and;
  • met the requirements set down by the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand for registration as a teacher in New Zealand in terms of good character and fitness to be a teacher.

Note: If you are aged 20 or over you must have evidence or be able to demonstrate prior success at tertiary study (Level 5 or above).

Potential students for this programme are required to have fluency in Te Reo Māori such that they can sustain learning in a total immersion Māori environment.

Application Process

To begin an initial teacher education programme you must first apply through the student homepage or by clicking on the Apply Now button. There is only one intake at the start of each year, but applications are open throughout the year for future intakes. Applications close on 10th December each year. Late applications may be considered subject to available places and complete documentation.

What documents do you need to supply to support your application?

  • A copy of your academic transcript/s.
  • A copy of your current curriculum vitae - please provide a full CV including details for at least the last five years and include brief details on recent formal and/or informal experiences and/or involvement in the following areas: experience with children/young adults; community activities; school activities; sport, music, drama, art, other cultures, travel, teaching/coaching and outdoor education.
  • A completed Te Kura Hāpai form. You are required to ask a Kura Kaupapa Māori that is a member of Te Rūnanga nui o ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa to act as a Kura Hāpai for you. The role of the Kura Hapai is to embrace, support and encourage you in your journey to complete your study.
  • A supporting statement - please supply a statement on why you chose this programme. List any personal characteristics you have that might strengthen your application.
  • A completed observation report from your observation of a group of primary or secondary learners. You must visit either a school or kura for at least half a day. You will need to describe the class/classes or activities that you observed, the teaching skills/techniques used and what the children did that illustrated how children learn. Your visit will need to be verified by the Principal, Head Teacher, Kaitiaki or your Supervisor for the day.
  • A consent to disclosure of information for a New Zealand Police check - including two pieces of verified identification (one of which must be photographic). See more details below about safety checks.
  • A copy of a police report from every overseas country you have lived in for more than 12 months in the last 10 years. Please do not supply originals as these will need to be supplied to the Education Council at a later date.
  • A health and disability declaration - if you have any short or long-term disability (including learning disability), impairment, injury or health issue. If you disclose any disability, health or personal information as part of your application, this will be assessed during the selection process and is confidential to the University staff processing your application.
  • An NZQA International Qualifications Assessment - if you have an overseas qualification (see details above).
  • Contact details of two referees. We require two people who can act as referees for you and who are able to provide informed responses on your personal suitability for the programme. A referee should be someone who has known you for one year or more in the capacity of employer, educator, work colleague or person of community standing, ie Kaumatua, Minister or similar. Your referee should not be a friend, flatmate, relative or someone who has not known you for at least a year. The information your referee supplies is confidential to those involved in the selection process.

Safety checks and disclosure of criminal convictions

All applicants are required to undergo a number of safety checks. This includes police vetting (including confirmation of identity) and further checks required under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014, Vulnerable Children Regulations 2015 and the Children’s Action Plan. You will be required to permit the College to ask the New Zealand Police to disclose any information held on the Police record system.

The Selection Process

All initial teacher education programmes at Massey University require students to be selected into the programme. The first part of the selection process involves assessment by academic staff within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. If the selection committee feel you potentially meet the 'fit character' and 'fit to be a teacher' criteria, you may be invited to an interview. This is the second part of the selection process. Interviews for the Te Aho Tatairangi programme will be conducted in Māori and on the marae if requested by the applicant. Potential students for this programme are required to have fluency in Te Reo Māori such that they can sustain learning in a total immersion Māori environment. The interview undertaken by College staff focuses on the following criteria:

  • Disposition for Teaching
  • Communication Skills
  • Achievement and Potential for Professional Full Time Study
  • Awareness of Teaching and Learning
  • School/Work/Community Involvement
  • Interests and Life Experiences

As part of the selection process, you may be asked to complete any of the selected tests as follows:

  1. A sample from the NCEA 3 Te Reo Rangatira - panui and tuhituhi external examination, and/or;
  2. A reo Maori test based on a Massey University 100-level (first year) examination to determine your ability to study at Level 5, and/or;
  3. A maths test based on the NCEA Mathematics Level 1 examinations.

You will be advised if you are required to sit any of the above tests, when you receive notification of your interview.

If the interview panel is satisfied that you are a suitable candidate for the Te Aho Tatairangi programme you will be reserved a place, depending on available places. Selection into a programme does not give you automatic entry and admission into the University. The Student Administration team will check and verify your entrance and admission and ensure you are enrolled correctly into your first year courses. Successful applicants who already meet the admission requirements and those who achieve university entrance in the NCEA examinations will be confirmed into their programme of study and sent an offer of place. To assume a place within a teacher education programme you must be selected, and gain entry and admission into the University and accept your offer Receipt of the Confirmation of Enrolment form will confirm and finalise the process.

Credits and prior learning

Students who have completed previous tertiary studies may have these assessed for credit towards the Te Aho Tātairangi. To apply for credit, complete an ‘Application for credit towards a Massey University qualification form’. There is an application fee for processing the credit.

Please note that due to the specialised nature of this qualification and as different institutions conduct their programmes in different ways, courses are not always transferable from one to another.

Delivery

A distinctive feature of this degree is that courses are taught using the medium of the Maori language through which students are expected to participate in this language.

The teaching and delivery of all the courses will reflect Te Aho Matua.

All courses will be delivered online and in face to face mode, although there will be opportunities for students themselves to experiment with a variety of teaching modes, including the use of computers in the curriculum.

Study from Overseas

Whilst, some of our teaching programmes are offered via Distance Learning, we do require that you are in New Zealand for their duration. The programme and Practicum Placements within it are relevant to the NZ curriculum (as it is New Zealand teacher registration that is the ultimate goal) and hence must be done within New Zealand.

Also, as practical and theoretical courses are intertwined you cannot do the theory/pedagogy courses first and then return to do the practical courses at a later date. Without full access to the New Zealand curriculum you would also be hugely disadvantaged in your assignments.

Practicum

Teaching practice is a compulsory component of the degree, and students will be placed in Kura Kaupapa, immersion or bilingual classrooms for the same hours as teachers work, ie approximately 8.00am - 5:00pm daily Students will be required to pass all teaching practice components of the programme and associated course work. Students may be required to travel for up to an hour each way during Student Practicum. Travel for practica is the responsibility of the student teacher.

Te Aho Tātairangi: Bachelor of Teaching Māori Medium / Diploma Māori Education structure

The Te Aho Tātairangi: Bachelor of Teaching Māori Medium/Diploma in Māori Education programme aims to graduate prospective teachers who:

  • are well informed, skilled and reflective beginning teachers
  • are committed to the philosophy of Te Aho Matua
  • are able to develop the full potential of all children, with a special focus on Kura Kaupapa Māori, Rumaki Reo and promoting Māori in primary education
  • meet standards of fluency in the Māori language necessary for total immersion teaching
  • are equipped with language acquisition methodologies and techniques which enable them to be effective practitioners
  • are knowledgeable in Tikanga Māori
  • have a practising knowledge of:
    1. Māori preferred pedagogy
    2. the relationship of the New Zealand Curriculum to the learning needs of Māori children
    3. research development and assessment issues and can engage in effective teaching practice in a range of immersion contexts with a sense of professionalism
  • have successfully completed a sequential programme which establishes a sound foundation for postgraduate study.
