“My sport management placement was the best experience in my academic life. Through my internship, people recognised my dedication and passion for sport, as well as my work ethics…”

Sports has always been a part of me. After years of teaching physical education, I realised that I wanted to learn more about the different pathways and careers in sport. I wanted to reach out to the community, work hand in hand with a National Sports Organisation and hopefully with an International Sports Body.

I took my Master of Sport Management at Massey University, Albany Campus because they offered papers that were of interest to me and what I thought I needed to advance in a sports career. I would say that another reason I chose Massey Uni was because they had partners and connections that would lead me to my dream job, which eventually happened!

My sport management placement was the best experience in my academic life. My internship at Harbour Sport and Harbour Volleyball Association taught me the know-hows of working in a Regional Sports Trust and a Regional Sports Organisation. I was able to help in community festivals, fun runs, tournaments and video promos. I also got to meet local and international star athletes and coaches!

Through my internship, people recognised my dedication and passion for sport, as well as my work ethics. I now work full-time for Volleyball New Zealand. My exciting journey started with them contracting me to do research on the needs of Auckland volleyball, then giving me the courage to apply as their events and administration manager. I now handle all the national tours, leagues, and office management. I also get to work with international governing bodies like the Asian Volleyball Confederation and Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).

Choosing a sport career is truly satisfying and enjoyable. My advice to other students is to take part and be active in every placement opportunity, step out of your comfort zone, and network with as many people as you can!
