An awards event in honour of Ngā Kupu Ora Māori Book Awards’ six inaugural winners; Dr Deidre Brown, Professor Ranginui Walker, Dr Monty Soutar, Malcolm Mulholland, Dr Merata Kawharu and Professor Ngahuia Te Awekotuku was held on Māori Language Day September 14 at Te Putahi-ā-Toi, Massey’s School of Māori Studies.
As well as the authors, publishers, university representatives and whānau, a large contingent of Māori boarding school students supported the event.
Awards host Professor Taiarahia Black says the event is an important opportunity to expose the next generation of writers and leaders to Māori literary excellence and achievement.
Each of the winning authors gave a presentation that was recorded and available to view on the Award categories page.
