Te Marama o te Reo Māori
"E ngā mātāwaka, e ngā tai e whā o te motu, ka rere kaupare atu ngā mihi matihere ki a koutou katoa. Arā a Matariki ka rewa mai i te pae, hei wānangatanga, hei whakariterite, hei titiro whakamua. Ka tū mai Te Marama o te Reo me tana kaupapa matua, ko te manaakitanga. Kia tau iho ngā manaakitanga ki a tātou katoa i tēnei wā."
Māori Language Week was first celebrated nationally in 1975. During the past decade, a resurgence of celebration activities has given new life to a language that is uniquely ours - growing and nurturing te reo for future generations.
This year, at Massey University, Māori Language Week is only the beginning. The University will celebrate te reo for the entire month with activities to engage and empower staff, students, and our communities to think and act multiculturally, and embrace a language that is very much alive, and uniquely ours.
The range and scope of activities and events happening in all parts of Aotearoa and overseas is testimony to the work of organisations like Te Taura Whiri te Reo Māori.

Awards and competitions
As part of this year's Māori Language Month activities across all three campuses, the University will – for the first time – hold the Hāpai I te Kaupapa Award for Manaakitanga – hospitality, caring for others. The award, open to all departments, students and staff, invites participants to nominate an individual or group within the University who best expresses the essence of Manaakitanga – the theme of this year's national Māori Language Week.
To coincide with Te Marama o Te Reo Māori, the University has launched it's Māori waiata: Te Kunenga ki Purehuroa. Staff and students are encouraged to learn the waiata, and to participate in a competition running throughout July to find our best performers! Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa
Massey University’s Māori name is Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa and is not a direct translation. A literal translation of Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa is ‘the implantation to infinity’ or ‘from inception to infinity’. The name is based on the view of Massey as a provider of life-long learning, able to move beyond traditional structures, and committed to the never-ending expansion of knowledge.
