Professor Paul Spoonley
Identifying New Zealanders
Based at the Albany campus, Professor Paul Spoonley is a sociologist who has been at Massey University since 1979. His research interests include immigration and settlement policies, ethnic policies and identities, political extremism (especially neo-fascism), the labour market in New Zealand and contemporary employment policies.
Professor Spoonley’s own research on immigration and settlement issues is funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology ($3.2 million - 2007-2012) as part of the Integration of Immigrants Programme (http://integrationofimmigrants.massey.ac.nz) which is being carried out as joint research with the University of Waikato. His work on labour markets has also been funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology ($2.9 million) and he is a key member of the Massey-based Building Research Capability in the Social Sciences Network, which received $8 million in 2004 to enhance postgraduate teaching and research. He contributes to policy development by working with government departments and local authorities, and has published over twenty books.
