Recognition of prior learning - information for postgraduate students

Massey University recognises prior learning achieved within both formal and informal settings.

Transfer of credit

Credit may be transferred from an incomplete qualification, at Massey University or elsewhere. Application for transfer of credit implies that you do not intend to complete the original qualification at a later date.

Many students obtain a university degree with papers from more than one university. If you do so, you must complete a degree under the regulations of one New Zealand university. You cannot make up your own selection.

Your papers from another university or tertiary-level institution will not be automatically credited - you must apply for this.

If you wish to transfer to Massey from another university you should apply for credit. You should nominate your programme of study and major subject, asking for clarification of the papers you require to complete your Massey degree.

Applying for credit

Credit is not awarded automatically. You must apply for it if you think you are eligible. Although there is no closing date for credit applications, you should aim to get your application in well before the beginning of semester to avoid any delay in your College approving your programme of study.

  • The application form (Credit towards a Massey University qualification) can be downloaded from the Enrolment web pages.
  • Forward the completed application form along with the application fee. There is no charge for crediting papers from one incomplete Massey qualification to another.
  • Forward verified copies of Academic Records of qualifications you wish credited towards your Massey qualification.

Postgraduate study
As a general rule candidates cannot cross-credit papers from a completed postgraduate qualification to another qualification and vice versa.

Things you need to know when you are applying for credit

  • The maximum amount of transfer credit available at graduate and postgraduate level is 25% of the destination qualification. Credit that is being transferred must be appropriate to the destination qualification.
  • You are strongly advised to apply in advance of the enrolment period as the process of granting credit can be lengthy (from four to six weeks).
  • Proceed with enrolment in other courses which are not affected by the credit transfer decision.
  • Until your credit is formally approved (where applicable) it will not count towards your degree or diploma.
  • Details of required certified documents and fees are listed on the application form.
  • Please note the transfer of credit fee must be paid at the time of application.

When you are enrolling be sure you make reference to any current transfer of credit application on your enrolment form.
