Scholarships and awards
We have almost 300 scholarships especially for our postgraduate students - and one of them could have your name on it!
Our Doctoral scholarships provide 40 students every year with a total of $22,000 each over three years of study, while our Masterate scholarships provide $15,000 for a year of research. There are also many more scholarships to choose from, depending on your field of study and the research goals you hope to achieve. Visit the Scholarships and awards web pages.
Who qualifies?
Most of our scholarships are available to students from within New Zealand. However, we (and the Ministry of Education) also offer some significant scholarships for international research students which are listed below.
And while the criteria differ widely, most scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, which means you need to have maintained a high (First Class Honours or A average) academic record during your most recent studies.
International student scholarships
NZAID study awards
The NZAID study awards are offered by the New Zealand Government under its bilateral aid programme for selected students from specific developing countries. If you want to apply for this award you must be nominated by your home government.
NZAID postgraduate scholarships
Also funded by the New Zealand Government, these scholarships are available for students from selected developing countries. They are awarded on the basis of academic merit, the developmental relevance of the qualification to the home country, gender and regional representation.
Commonwealth scholarships
Commonwealth scholarships are available to students from other parts of the Commonwealth under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. They aim to provide opportunities for students to pursue advanced courses or undertake research at university in New Zealand. To qualify, you must be a Commonwealth citizen or British-protected person and have graduated from an institution in your own country.
English language awards
A limited number of English language tuition scholarships are available for government or university sponsored international students from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam preparing for a PhD at Massey University.
Students from these countries applying for a PhD at Massey University will be automatically assessed for the 24 week tuition fee scholarship once they are approved in principle for their PhD.
Additional English language tuition scholarships for prospective degree students are available from time to time.
