Communicating scientific information about the level of volcanic activity is an important component of mitigating the risk of eruptions. Volcanic unrest is the key indication of an impending eruption. However, it can be difficult to distinguish between normal volcanic activity and unrest. Ms Potter created an innovative Volcanic Unrest Index to quantify and define volcanic unrest. This index enables a world-first comparison of the intensity of unrest between volcanoes and over time. She developed a catalogue of historical unrest for Taupo Volcanic Centre, a caldera volcano
