Welcome to the Hokowhitu Library

The Hokowhitu Campus Library supports the learning, teaching and research needs of the staff and students (internal and distance) of the College of Education. Teachers, Massey University Alumni and members of the public are also welcome to visit the Hokowhitu Library.

Location and Maps

The Hokowhitu Library is located to the left of the Quadrangle, behind the Tower Block and main car park at the Hokowhitu Campus, Centennial Drive, Palmerston North.

Parking near the Library:

  • Main car park costs $2.00 per day (main entrance to campus, turn to the right)
  • Mobility parks are located to the left side of the Tower Block Building
  • Cycle parking is available outside the Library

Hokowhitu Library Desks

Both the Lending Desk and the Information Desk are open all opening hours.

Lending Desk Services (Level 1)

  • Issues/Borrowing
  • Returns
  • Renewals
  • Collecting requested items that are "Ready for pickup"
  • Reserve Collection
    Set text books and material placed on reserve by course controllers
    Available for 2 hour loan in the Library
  • Adding credit to network accounts for printing and photocopying (cash & EFTPOS)
  • Purchase of CDs, photocopy cards, OHP/acetate, headphones and book bags
  • Lost property (all lost property is forwarded to Security daily)
  • Payment of Library fines and charges

Information Desk Services (Level 1)

  • General help and enquiries
  • Assistance with locating library material, literature searching
  • Assistance with using MyLibrary, databases, photocopiers, computers, and other equipment
  • Staff and postgraduate research consultations available by appointment
  • EndNote support

Collections

The Hokowhitu Library is a specialist education collection supporting the study, research and teaching needs of the staff and students of the College of Education. The collection includes books and journals on all aspects of education and teaching. Audio-visual resources are available for borrowing; these include kits, posters, DVDs and CDs. There is an extensive collection of children’s books which includes readers, school journals, picture books and shared readers.

Study Areas

Quiet Study Areas

There are spaces for individual study throughout the Hokowhitu Library:

  • Individual desks around the outer walls of both levels of the Library, with power socket and light
  • Desks on Level 2 between the 500s and 600s

Group Study Areas

There are three main areas for group study:

  • Tables for group work on Level 2 between the Seminar Room and the Audiovisual Collection
  • Two areas on Level 1 - the large tables behind the Reference Collection and next to the Picture Book Collection and Journals Display.

Disability Access & Services

The Hokowhitu Library has a wheelchair access lift to the left of the front stairs, plus a stair lift between Level One and Level Two. Mobility car parks are located outside the Tower Block, in the main car park.

Distance Students

Distance students are very welcome to visit Hokowhitu Library. We offer the same services to distance students as we do to those studying internally. Please bring your ID card or, if you haven't received one, photo identification.

At the Lending Desk, books will be issued for the longer distance loan period. Freepost return labels are available on request. Books from any Massey Library may be returned to Hokowhitu Library. For more information about services for distance students please visit The Library for Distance Students.

All distance students have a login for the Information Commons, and access to all computing and printing facilities. Use your student ID number and Massey PIN. Please ask at the Lending Desk for assistance with your Massey PIN.

Hokowhitu Library Information Commons

There are 6 Information Commons PCs located in the Seminar Room on Level 2 of the Hokowhitu Library. This room is also used for teaching library-related classes. There are also two Information Commons PCs outside the computer room on Level 2. On Level 1, there are four Information Commons PCs and two Library Catalogue PCs next to the Information Desk.

Information Technology Services (ITS) Computer Labs on the Manawatu campus offer additional computing facilities, including a wider range of software than in the Library Information Commons. The Te Ara Computer Lab is located in the Te Ara Building on the Hokowhitu Campus.

Availability

Computers in the Library are available on a first-come first-served basis. Computers may not be reserved, (except by Library staff for training sessions). Computers unattended for more than 15 minutes may be logged off by Library staff and made available for other users.

Appropriate Use

Use of the computers should be in accordance with the University’s Use and Access to Information Technology Systems Policy. Please limit activities that are not course-related (e.g. social networking, email) at peak times or when others are waiting to use computers. Access to TradeMe is blocked 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday.

Macintosh Computers

There are no Macintosh computers in the Hokowhitu Library. Students can access Macintosh computers in the Te Ara computer labs, on the Hokowhitu Campus.

Printing

Two black and white printers available; one next to the Information Desk on Level One and one in the Seminar Room on Level 2. One colour printer is located on Level 1, near the Information Desk.

Wireless Access

Massey University’s Wireless Networking Service is available to all enrolled students and staff. Connection and configuration information can be found on the ITS web site, and guide sheets are available from the Information Desk.

Coverage maps for the Hokowhitu Campus are available from ITS.

Computing Facilities for Visually Impaired Students

One computer is provided by Disability Services to assist visually impaired students. This computer has adjustable screen profiles, which can display very large print. It is located near the Journals Display on Level 1. Please contact Disability Services to discuss your individual needs.

Public Access

Members of the public are welcome to use the collection while visiting the Library. For those who wish to join the library, membership options are available. Visitors may access electronic resources (licences permitting) while on site; ask at the Lending Desk for assistance. Contact us to confirm if access is available for a particular resource. Printing from databases is not available; files may be saved to USB, CD or they can be emailed. Photocopy cards can be purchased from the Lending Desk.

Help & Instruction

Folders of instructions and tips for the Information Commons computers are available at the Information desk and in the Seminar Room on Level 2. For further assistance please ask at the Lending Desk.

Time Limits for Recreational Use

No time limits apply unless the computers are in high demand. Please consider your fellow students if your activities are not course-related (e.g. gaming, social networking, email). Access to TradeMe is blocked 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Photocopying

Two copiers are available on Level 1: one black and white, one colour-capable. OHP/Acetate can be purchased from the Lending Desk. Instruction sheets and an instruction manual are located next to the black and white copier. For further assistance please ask at the Lending Desk.

Photocopy Costs

  • Student ID cards can be used as photocopying cards. Your network account must be in credit balance.
  • Credit can be added using the EFTPOS workstation on Level 1, or at the Lending Desk.
  • Your network account can be used for both printing and photocopying.
  • Photocopy cards can be purchased from the Lending Desk.
  • Copying costs:
    $0.07 black and white A4 (excluding GST)
    $0.14 black and white A3 (excluding GST)
    $0.30 colour A4 (excluding GST)
    $0.60 colour A3 (excluding GST)
    $0.60 casual photocopy card
    Please note that GST is deducted when credit is added to the network budget.

Housekeeping

Food & Drink

Food and drink is permitted in the Library, however, hot smelly food is not permitted. Drinks with spill-proof lids are allowed.

Noise

Please be considerate of your fellow students and staff while working in the Library. Turn cell phones off or switch to silent mode when in the Library.

Lost Property

Lost property items, including USB drives and library cards, are held at the Lending Desk for 24-48 hours, after which they are collected by Security.
