Manawatū library building project

Major building work at the Manawatū campus library has paused.

Location

The Manawatū library is on the Concourse at our campus in Palmerston North.

There are a number of places you can park your bike or car near the library. These include:

  • bicycle parking on the Science Tower side of the library
  • mobility parking behind the library on Library Road
  • short-term paid parking behind the library and on University Avenue
  • after-hours free general parking next to the library.

Study areas and rooms

The library has a range of places where you can study. You can study in the following spaces without booking in advance:

  • quiet zones on Levels One, Two, and Three.
  • group study areas on Levels One and Two.

You need to book the following spaces in advance:

  • small study rooms for one person on Level Two at the city end of the building
  • discussion rooms for up to six people, next to the training rooms on Level Two
  • a large group space for up to 12 people next to the book collection on Level Two.

Book a study room

Service point

The service point is on Level One opposite the library entrance. You’ll find staff there who can help you during the library’s opening hours.

The service point is the place to go for:

Your Massey ID card acts as your library card for borrowing items. You can also use it for printing and photocopying.

If you’re a staff member or postgraduate researcher, you can also make an appointment with a subject librarian

Some services may not be available on weekday evenings after 6pm, weekends and public holidays.

Lost property is held at the service point for up to a week and then sent to security. Some items such as clothing are held for up to a month then donated or disposed of.

Computers and wifi

The Wāhi Rorohiko (computer zone) is on Level One of the library. There are more computers on Level Two at the city end of the building, and computers in the training rooms that can be used when the rooms are not being used for classes.

The computers are available for students and staff to use on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visitors can access some electronic resources on their own device by connecting to the MU Guest wifi network.

The computers in the library have the same software and applications as the computers in the general student computing labs. These include:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Microsoft Office
  • EndNote
  • Adobe
  • Multimedia players
  • Student Massey network (H:) drive and OneDrive.

No other software or plug-ins may be installed on the computers.

It’s essential that you follow the ITS Information Security Centre’s policies and guidelines.

Using the wifi network

Massey’s wifi network is available throughout the library and is free to all staff and students. MU Guest and commercial wifi networks are available for visitors.

Power points

There are power points throughout the library that you can use for mobile devices and laptops. You might also be able to borrow a multi-plug power box from the service point.

Printing, photocopying and scanning

There are printers on Levels One and Two. You can use them to:

  • print in colour and black and white, on both A3 and A4 paper
  • photocopy, including onto overhead transparencies
  • scan.

If you want to photocopy onto overhead transparencies, you need to buy sheets at the service point.

  • There is no charge for students to print, copy or scan.
  • Massey monitors printing and copying transactions and charges. Excessive costs may be recovered by the university.
  • For assistance with printing, please contact your library’s Service Point

Disability access

The library has:

  • mobility parking nearby
  • ramp access
  • automatic doors
  • accessible toilets
  • lifts
  • a disabilities resource room with specialised equipment and ergonomic furniture.

Library staff can also help you with:

  • using the photocopiers
  • collecting books from shelves.

It’s a good idea to let us know in advance if you’ll need our help with these.

Off-campus students

If you’re studying off campus, you can visit the Manawatū campus library and use the same facilities and services as students studying on campus. Make sure you bring your student ID card or other photo identification if you don’t have one.

You can get FreePost return labels from the service point so you can send back any materials you borrow. You can return books to any campus library.

You can request print resources held at any Massey library to be sent to your home address.

Collections

The Manawatū campus library has a large collection that covers all the disciplines taught at the campus. There are multiple copies of many texts.

Massey’s main collections for these areas of study are at the Manawatū library:

  • social sciences
  • business
  • sciences, especially veterinary science, agriculture and horticulture.

Other services and facilities

DIY Kai

The DIY Kai (kitchen) area is on Level Two. You can bring your own food in and use the microwaves to heat it up. There is also boiling and filtered water.

Parents’ room

You can use the parents’ room for feeding babies and changing nappies. It also has a small fridge.

You need to ask at the service point to use the room. Library staff will show you where it is.

Display space

There is display space on Level One that you can book if you have something you want to display. The space can be in high demand so it’s wise to book in advance.

After-hours returns

When the library is closed, you can return your items in one of the after-hours returns bins. You’ll find them at the front entrance of the library and at the back of the library. You can drive up to the back of the library where the bins are.

Respecting other library users

The library is a place for study, and it’s important to respect other library users while you’re using the facilities.

Food and drink

You can bring food and drink into the library if you’re careful with it. Drinks need to be in spill-proof containers.

You can only bring hot or strong-smelling food into the hot food zones. These are:

  • Level One (Science Tower end)
  • DIY Kai on Level Two.

Noise

Please keep noise levels to a minimum and turn off your mobile phone or put it on silent while you’re in the library. You can make calls from group areas or the stairwells.
