Borrowing
You can borrow books and other materials from our campus libraries. Some items like print journals are 'reference only'. This means you can use them in the library but you can’t borrow them.
You need your Massey ID card to borrow books in person, even if you've ordered them to collect from a service point in one of our campus libraries.

Loan times and numbers
The number of items you can borrow and how long you can borrow them for depends on:
- your level of study
- how many people use them – some high demand items can only be borrowed for 14 days at a time

If you are going away, please return all Library books before you go or arrange for someone to clear your mail and return a recalled item on your behalf.
Returns and recalls
We will email you a return receipt when we issue your items to you. It's your responsibility to check when your items are due back in the library and return them before the due dates. If you return items late, you may get fined.
You can either drop your books off at any of our campus libraries, or post them back to us free of charge.

Renewals
Renewing a library book or other resource means you increase the amount of time before you need to return it. You can renew most items up to four times:
- in person
- by phone
- through MyLibrary.
You may not be able to renew an item if:
- someone else has requested it
- it's very overdue
- it's a high demand item that lots of users need.
Recalls
If another user needs an item that's checked out to you, we may recall it by email. This means you need to return it to the library earlier than the original due date. Due to high demand textbooks are highly likely to be recalled.
Contact us if you can't return an item that we have recalled. If you don't return a recalled item, you may get a fine.
Textbooks
If your course has a compulsory textbook, we strongly advise you to buy your own copy. The Library keeps a limited number of textbooks and these are in high demand, so may be recalled from you.
Fines and charges
If you miss the due date to return items to the library, we say the items are overdue. We charge you a fine if you have overdue books or other items, and:
- they're in the short loan collection, or
- another library user has requested them.
The fine in New Zealand dollars is:
- $1 for each hour that short loan items are overdue – and an extra $15 if you keep them overnight, or
- $3 a day for items that another user has requested, up to a maximum of $45.
If you have overdue items that another library user needs, you may get a fine. You may owe less than your MyLibrary record shows. Contact us before you pay your fine or charge.
You won't be able to borrow, renew or request items if you have:
- fines that total NZD$45 or more
- any item that is 10 days overdue
- an item we have recalled and is one day or more overdue
- not paid your university fees.
Very overdue items
If you still haven't returned an item 28 days after it was due back, we charge you:
- the cost of replacing the item
- a processing fee
- a fine of up to $45, if another library user has requested the item.
We send you an invoice for these costs. There are more penalties if you don't pay the invoice or contact us within 10 days of getting it.
- 7 days after the date of the letter, you will stop being able to use the library and our electronic resources
