Learn how to order items to your email, home, or campus library, discover how you can get material from other libraries through interlibrary loan, or recommend a library purchase.

Requesting items from Massey's collections

You can read many library books and most journal articles online – but you can also request to have books and journal articles sent to you.

  • We can email you copies of print journal articles.
  • We can email you chapters of print books. This is useful when your book is not for loan or is on short loan.
  • You can get books delivered to your home, or pick them up at your nearest Massey campus.

Journal articles

If you need to read an article that is only available in print, you can order a copy. We'll scan it and email it to you.

If you are on campus, and the article is available on our library shelves, you can visit the library and scan it yourself.

Massey staff

Use step 4 above to fill in your postal address and we’ll send your books to that address.

Delivery times

We send your books by CourierPost.

  • Delivery is overnight in most cities, so you should get your books the day after you order them.
  • If you live in a rural delivery area, it may take a few days for your books to arrive.

Sending books back to us

Post your books and articles back to us free of charge at any Post Shop, using the return label we included in your package. If you’ve lost the label, you can download and print a new one.

You can use the bag we sent your books in to send them back to us – just turn it inside out, so it’s grey on the outside. If you want to use your own packaging, make sure it’s strong and won’t break.

Don't include any letters or payments in your parcel – these are handled by another section of the library, and they might get lost.

Due dates

The due date for your books tells you when they need to be back at the library – not when you should post them. It’s best to send your books back to us four to five working days before they’re due.

Contact us as soon as you can if you’re having problems returning books to us.

Requesting items from other libraries by interlibrary loan

If you're a postgraduate student, researcher or Massey staff member, you can use the interlibrary loan service to get items that are not in the Massey library. These items are intended to support the learning, research, and teaching needs of the university.

Fill in the form for the resource you need. Use a separate form for each request, and give us as much detail as you can about the item.

Costs and timeframes

The cost of an interlibrary loan and how long it takes to get your items depends on whether:

  • you decide to make a standard request for free or pay for an urgent request
  • the resources you need are available in New Zealand or Australia, or need to come from further away.

Standard requests

Standard requests don't cost anything.

  • Articles usually arrive within a week.
  • Books available in New Zealand usually arrive within 1-2 weeks.
  • Books available from Australia usually arrive within 2 - 3 weeks.
  • Books from overseas take longer to arrive. We'll contact you if we think your book will arrive after your need by date.

Urgent requests

Urgent requests usually cost NZD $15 each – but if you need an item that's expensive to get, we may talk to you about sharing the cost.

If you make an urgent request, we'll start looking for your items within 24 hours. The service is open from Monday to Friday, except on public or university holidays.

Check the dates of university holidays

  • Articles available in New Zealand or Australia usually arrive within 24 hours.
  • Articles from other overseas libraries may take longer.
  • We order books as soon as we get your request, but delivery times can vary. If we can't find the book you need in New Zealand or Australia, we'll contact you to let you know how long it's likely to take to arrive.

How to pay

When you place your urgent request, please choose to charge to a departmental account, OR charge to library account.

Copyright rules for interlibrary loans

When we get material from other libraries for you, we need to comply with the Copyright Act 1994, and its license with Copyright Licensing Ltd. This means we can only:

  • make one copy of an article or part of a work
  • copy up to two articles from the same issue of a journal if these relate to the same subject matter
  • copy items for you to use in your private study or research – material from other libraries can't be reproduced in study guides or placed in the Short Loan Collection without the copyright holder's permission
  • copy a work under fair dealing guidelines.
