Refining results

Sometimes, searching for a title turns up lots of reviews of the book you're looking for – and if you're not used to Discover, it can be hard to know which result is the one you need. Refine your results to make sure you only see books.

  1. Find the Refine Results menu on the left of the results page.
  2. Under Limit to, tick the box that says Library collection: excluding articles.
  3. You can also limit to ebooks or print books only.

Look for books on your topic

You can use Discover to find books on a topic you want to explore.

  1. Go to Discover.
  2. Write keywords for your topic in the search box.
  3. Click on Search to see the results.
  4. Find the Refine Results menu on the left of the results page.
  5. Under Limit to, tick the box that says Library collection: excluding articles.
  6. You can also limit to ebooks or print books only. Most of our newer books are ebooks, so using these limits will affect the dates of the results.

Ebooks

Search for ebooks in Discover

Massey library buys ebooks wherever possible so you can read them online or download them. You may also be able to do things like annotate, highlight, or copy and paste text.

Search for ebooks in Discover by doing a title or topic search. Then, you can limit the results to Ebooks if needed.

Some ebooks have user limits. If the user limit is reached, you will see a message. You may need to come back later to see if it has become available.

The ways you can read an ebook depend on the publisher.

Read ebooks online

If you are connected to the internet you can read all of our ebooks online, without having to download the ebook, get extra software or create an account. It is the easiest option if you are on a Massey library or computer lab computer, and for many other computers and devices.

Look for links such as: PDF Full Text, Read Online, EPUB Full Text or similar.

If you are reading a book on EBSCOhost, and a new PDF opens every time you turn a page, here’s how to fix the problem.

Download ebooks to read offline

You may be able to download an entire book, for a set issue period, to read offline (i.e. when you are not connected to the internet). You may need to install some software before you can download the ebook.

Textbooks

Some Massey courses have:

  • compulsory textbooks, which every student needs to have
  • recommended textbooks, which it's a good idea to get and read.

If your course has a compulsory textbook, we strongly advise you to buy your own copy. The Library keeps a limited number of textbooks and these are in high demand.

Find what textbooks you need for your course

You can use Discover to find compulsory and recommended textbooks.

  1. Go to Discover.
  2. If you know the title, enter this.
  3. If you want to see all of the course textbooks, enter the course number – for example, 139105.
