Searching the Library Catalogue

View our demonstration on how to search the Library Catalogue View a demonstration.

Basic Keyword Search

  • Search the catalogue using keyword(s). Enter your keyword(s) in the search box e.g. climate. Then click on the arrow button or press Enter.
  • Search for multiple keywords in the following ways:

If you leave a space between each word the catalogue will automatically connect your keywords with AND e.g. climate change zealand.
You can also type the word AND (in upper case) instead of leaving a space.

To search for synonyms connect your keywords with OR (in upper case) e.g. teenage OR youth.

If you are searching for a known title, or a phrase, enclose the title or phrase in double quotation marks e.g. "short history of new zealand"; "total quality management".

Use an asterisk to retrieve variant word endings e.g. search for teenage* to retrieve teenage, teenaged, teenager and teenagers.

Advanced Keyword Search

  • Use the advanced keyword search to do more complex searches.

  • Enter your keyword(s) in the box(es) provided.

  • Use the drop-down menus to select where you want the catalogue to find your search terms:

Keyword - search for keyword(s) that describe your topic.

Title - search for your keywords in the title of a work, including chapter titles from edited works, conference paper titles from conference proceedings, individual CD tracks, and plays within collected works.
This option will also search many abbreviated journal titles.

Subject - search Library of Congress subject headings or Nga Upoko Tukutuku/Maori Subject Headings by keyword.

Author - search for personal authors or editors, or organisation names, by keyword. You can enter last names in any order, or any words from an organisation's name in any order. For works with many authors or editors only the first one, two or three names will be used in the catalogue record. This option will not search for authors of chapters.

  • Choose how you want the catalogue to connect your keywords (AND; OR; NOT).

AND will narrow your search to just items that contain all the words you have specified.
OR will broaden your search to items that contain any of the words you have specified.
NOT will exclude items that contain the word(s) you have specified.

  • Choose your required format, collection, language, publication year or other facets in the left hand column:

Format -allows you to choose a format e.g. music recording, music score (includes play-a-longs), non-music recording, thesis, video/DVD.

Collection - allows you to limit your search to items held in a particular Massey library; journals only; or items available electronically or online.
