Use of Journal Articles in Stream and Printed Study Guides

Citing Copyrighted Material

For any copyrighted material that you use in Stream or printed study guides, you are required to include a complete citation. If the material was taken from an article database, the citation should include this information as well. Please also include the wording, "Provided by Massey University Library."

Linking to Electronic Journal Articles from Stream

For teaching purposes, it is possible to insert into Stream direct links to electronic journal articles. For assistance with creating links in Stream, email the Library. Please include in your email the citations of the articles to which you would like to link. The Library will send you the URLs within two working days of the receipt of the request.

Uploading PDFs into Stream

Please note that many electronic journals have licence restrictions which do not allow their articles to be uploaded into Stream. The Library Catalogue provides information about such licence permissions and restrictions for many online journals. To view this information, find the journal record in the Library Catalogue, and click on "more info". The permitted and restricted uses are listed under "License" in the window that opens. If no information is listed for your journal, please contact the Library with your article citations. We will provide you with URLs which you can use to link directly to your articles instead of uploading them into Stream.

Use of Journal Articles in Printed Study Guides

If you are planning to include copies of journal articles in your printed study guide, you must comply with copyright provisions. Therefore, it is important to observe the following guidelines:

  1. If any of the Massey campus libraries hold the article in print, you should copy the article from the print version of the journal rather than from the electronic version. To see whether or not the Library holds the print version, search for the journal by title in the Library Catalogue. Within the journal's catalogue record, any print holdings will be listed under "Library Holdings" (click on the image for the full screen view):

Please note: If the print journal is held by another Massey campus library, click here to place a request for your article.
  2. For content that the Library only holds online, articles may be able to be printed and photocopied for inclusion in study guides. However, some publishers forbid their content to be included in study guides. The Library Catalogue provides information about specific licence permissions and restrictions such as these. To view this information, find the journal record in the catalogue, and click on "more info". The permitted and restricted uses are listed under "License" in the window that opens. If no information is listed for your journal, please contact the Library with your article citations. We will provide you with URLs which you can use in your teaching materials to link directly to your articles.
  3. If you have any further questions please contact us.
