About Our Tours and Classes

The Library offers a range of tours and classes. Programmes may differ at each campus; ask in person at one of our desks, or check the Library Tours and Classes Schedule for the most recent information.

Information Skills Classes

These are course-specific face-to-face classes for students, arranged with lecturers, and usually held in the Library.  Supporting material and tutorials can also be provided within the Stream course.

Content:

  • Ways to find books, journal and newspaper articles and related study resources using the Library Catalogue, article databases and the Internet
  • Hands-on searching time and practical exercises
  • Evaluation of resources found

Duration: 50 minutes (undergraduate classes); 1.5 - 2 hours (postgraduate classes)

Students: If a class is not already booked for your course, ask your lecturer to arrange a class or contact your College Liaison Librarian.

EndNote Workshops

All Massey Libraries provide regular workshops in the use of EndNote reference management software. Forthcoming workshops are included on the Library Tours and Classes Schedule.  Our EndNote page provides more information on EndNote.

Library Tours

Albany, Turitea and Wellington Libraries: Tours are offered at the beginning of Semesters 1 and 2 at scheduled times. No booking is needed to attend these tours.

Hokowhitu Library: Tours are given as part of the class group.

Content:

  • Introduction to Library services and resources
  • Tour of the Library: layout, shelf arrangement, location of services.

Tours at all libraries are given at other times by arrangement. Please ask at the Information Desk.

 

Microsoft Office and File Management Classes (Albany and Turitea Libraries only)

At the beginning of Semesters 1 and 2 IT staff at the Albany and Turitea Libraries offer training in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, plus an introduction to file management.

Forthcoming classes are listed on the Library Tours and Classes Schedule. Bookings are essential.

Drop-In Classes

Drop-in classes are offered on occasion. These include training in:

  • The use of specific databases
  • The use of Google
  • Information searching skills
  • IT skills

Forthcoming classes are included on the Library Tours and Classes Schedule.

Classes for Distance Learning Students

The Library provides information skills classes for distance learning courses during contact and block courses. Content and activities are also provided in Stream.

Students: If a class is not already booked for your course, or there is no Library tuition in Stream, ask your lecturer to arrange a class or contact your College Liaison Librarian.

Staff: Please contact your College Liaison Librarian to book a class or arrange for Library tuition within your Stream course.

Distance Learning Regional Seminars and On Campus Days
At the beginning of Semesters 1 and 2 The Centre for Teaching and Learning offers Regional Seminars for Distance Learning students, and Distance Learning On Campus Days are held in Albany, Manawatu, Wellington and Christchurch. These seminars include information on:

  • The Distance Library Service
  • Borrowing and requesting material
  • Finding information for your assignments and study

There is also time to meet with a librarian for individual help. Phone (06) 3502251 if you would like to book yourself for an individual appointment.

Knowledge Management in Research Workshops

Knowledge Management in Research (KMIR) is a series of workshops designed to provide Massey academic staff and postgraduate students with an understanding of the modern knowledge environment that will allow them to locate and manage information with maximum effectiveness and efficiency. The Library delivers this series of workshops at all campuses in conjunction with the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

Modules:

  • The Scholarly Internet (KMIR2)
  • Introductory EndNote (KMIR3A)
  • Advanced EndNote (KMIR3B)
  • Making Your Research Count (KMIR4)

Making Your Research Count

Academic staff: are you preparing to meet PBRF deadlines? At the Turitea and Wellington sites we're running a set of extra seminars called Making Your Research Count.
The classes are designed to equip researchers to assess and describe the impact of their work.
Note: These classes are also offered as part of the Knowledge Management in Research workshops which are available at the Albany, Turitea and Wellington sites.

Library Classes in Stream

Librarians are increasingly providing Library tutorials and content within Stream courses. This may be instead of or as well as a face-to-face class.

Content includes:

  • Demonstrations of searching the Library Catalogue or specific databases, search techniques and advice about course-related resources
  • Quizzes
  • Activities for practice or as part of an assignment

Students: If there is no Library tuition as part of your Stream course, ask your lecturer to arrange this with their College Liaison Librarian.

Staff: Please contact your College Liaison Librarian to arrange for Library tuition within your Stream course.  Refer to our Support for Stream and Teaching Online page for further information.
