Renewals

You may renew your items on loan in person, by phone, or by logging in to MyLibrary on the Library Catalogue. Please check the new due dates for all items that you have on loan. Your books can be renewed three times and then will need to be returned to the Library.

Renewing a book after it has become overdue will incur a fine.

Returns

  • Please return any items on loan by the due date
  • Courtesy reminder notices are sent (via email only) 3 days before an item is due to internal borrowers; and 4 days before an item is due to distance borrowers.
  • Overdue notices are sent after the items are due back, however, non-receipt of an overdue notice will not constitute grounds for waiving of fines

Recalls

Recalls allow for the maximum use of items that are needed by many borrowers.

  • If another borrower has requested any item you have on loan, it may be recalled from you. Please note it may have a new due date
  • Please return recalled items promptly for others to use or contact us immediately if there is a problem, as late returns will be fined at $3 per item, per day
  • We encourage all borrowers to check MyLibrary regularly for high demand items that may be recalled
  • If you are going away, you need to return all Library books before you go or arrange for someone to clear your mail and return a book on your behalf if recalled

Fines and Overdues

Fine rates for students are:

  • 30 cents per day for a book or audio visual item returned or renewed after its due date
  • $3 per day overdue for short-term loans or recalled items
  • A maximum $15 charge for an item returned after 28 days
  • Course reserves (2 hour loans) are fined at $1 per hour, or part thereof, for late return.  An additional $15 fine may be imposed on overdue overnight loans

All borrowers will be prevented from borrowing, renewing or placing requests:

  • if fines total $15 or more
  • when an item reaches 10 days overdue
  • when a recalled item is 1 day or more overdue

Very Overdue Items

Any item still overdue at 28 days will be invoiced at a default item charge, plus a $15 billing fee as well as a processing fee.

If you have lost a book or it has been damaged while on loan to you it must be reported as soon as possible. Please contact library@massey.ac.nz or phone 0800 MASSEY (0800 627 739).

Outstanding Library Debt

If after a period of 10 days you fail to respond to the 28 day invoice, return the item/s or make arrangements for payment you will be sent a final letter.  This letter advises that:

  • your Library access will expire within 7 days from the date of this letter
  • your access to Library electronic resources may be blocked
  • after another 7 days your name will be lodged at Registry, your university registration may be cancelled and you may be unable to receive exam results, graduate or re-enrol.

If left unresolved the debt may be referred to a debt collection agency.

Paying Fines

In some circumstances individual overdue fines may be reduced so please contact the Library for the actual amount outstanding before payment.  You may owe less than your MyLibrary record shows.

You can pay your fines by:

  • Cash: You can pay at any Massey Campus Library
