Citation instructions and examples
Submission of citation
Citations for Doctoral Candidates attending the Graduation Ceremony will be printed in the Graduation Programme and read by the Vice-Chancellor in the appropriate Ceremony. Some examples of the sort of material required are below.
Although some universities no long read citations at graduation ceremonies, Massey University believes it is an important part of the ceremonial occasion which enhances your experience on the day.
The citations may also be used as a Press Release, hence the need to write a clear statement intelligible to a lay person. Please avoid the use of jargon or complex technical language. Citations may be edited by the Vice-Chancellor to achieve some uniformity.
It is important to the University to have your name pronounced correctly at graduation when your citation is read. To assist with this, if you have any concerns that your name might be difficult for the Vice Chancellor to pronounce, then you are required to provide a 'phonetic' example of how your name should be read. A phonetic example is shown below. The Vice Chancellor will use the phonetic example to assist his pronunciation when reading your name and citation at the Graduation ceremony. Providing a phonetic example will help to ensure that your name is pronounced correctly.
Prior to use, the citation may be subject to editing by the journalist serving the candidate’s campus. All Doctoral students are expected to submit their citation at the time of their thesis submission for examination. Citations must be no longer than 150 words.
Citations are required from all Doctoral candidates regardless on whether Doctoral candidates intend to participate in a graduation ceremony. Upon completion of the Doctoral examination process the citation will be placed on the Graduate Research School website.
Please provide a brief statement of three sentences or so to why you undertook your study (or why your topic was important) and what you found at the end of it (or what original contribution you have made to knowledge). Hopefully this will enhance the audience's ability to understand what your thesis is about and lead to the media taking an interest because this makes it more accessible to them.
Please e-mail your area of study and citation, not exceeding 150 words, to Doctoral.Office@massey.ac.nz.
