Massey University College Awards

The Office of the Provost, Research & Enterprise is pleased to announce the Massey University College Research Awards will open from Wednesday, 26th September 2018 and will close on Friday, 2nd November 2018 at 5:00pm.

The College Research Awards recognise the outstanding research achievements of Massey University staff.  Apply here for the following awards, each of which may be awarded annually within each College

  1. Individual,
  2. Early Career, and
  3. Supervisor

The winners of the College Research Awards will be presented with their awards at a special College ceremony.  All winners of a College Research Award are nominated automatically for consideration for the corresponding Massey University Research Medal.

The Office of the Provost, Research & Enterprise invites nominations from heads of academic units, research centre directors, research directors and also invites self-nominations and nominations by colleagues. The winners of the College Awards will be presented with their award at a special College ceremony.

   College Research Award - Individual

The College Research Award – Individual was established to recognise research excellence.  One award may be granted annually to an outstanding individual researcher in each College. 

Each winner of a College Research Award – Individual is nominated automatically for consideration for the University Research Medal – Individual.  One Medal may be awarded annually with an associated grant of $20,000.  In exceptional circumstances the Vice-Chancellor, upon recommendation from the University Awards Selection Committee, may award more than one Massey University Research Medal – Individual in a year, each with a grant of $20,000.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Nominees must be permanent academic or research employees of Massey University who have been employed continuously for the past five years;
  2. Nominees should have at least ten years’ research experience;
  3. Nominees must have made a significant contribution to their fields of study, and
  4. Recipients may receive this award only once.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The College level awards selection committees and the University Awards Selection Committee will assess the evidence and supporting information submitted in the nomination against the criteria below.  In order to be considered for the Massey University Research Medal the University Awards Selection Committee will be looking for strong validation of research excellence from referees who are external to Massey University and evidence of international collaborations.

  1. Nominee meets all the eligibility conditions;
  2. Clear evidence of outstanding research or creative contributions in the nominee’s discipline;
  3. A cohesive “case” for research excellence;
  4. Compelling support from at least one referee external to Massey (to be considered for the Massey University Research Medal – Individual, three  referees external to Massey University must be provided);
  5. Evidence of international research collaboration, and
  6. Demonstration of research impact on the discipline, and on society (for example to advance economic, environmental or cultural outcomes at community, industry or national/international levels).

NOMINATION PROCEDURE AND SUPPORTING EVIDENCE

Nominations will be accepted from Heads of Academic Units, Research Centre Directors or Research Directors, along with self-nominations and nominations by colleagues. 

Nominations for the College Research Award – Individual must be made via the online template.  All evidence and supporting documentation should be uploaded to the template. 

The information supplied should focus on demonstrating how the nomination meets the assessment criteria. 

Should the nominee be granted the award by the College level awards selection committee the award winner’s full nomination, including all evidence and supporting documentation, will then be considered by the University Awards Selection Committee for the Massey University Research Medal – Individual.

The following information should be included in the nomination:

  1. A brief statement giving reasons why the nominee should receive the award;
  2. A statement of research impact with details and evidence of the relevant contributions the nominee has made in a subject or discipline, and on society;
  3. A statement of support for the nomination from the Head of Department/Institute/School or Director of a Research Centre and/or College Pro Vice-Chancellor;
  4. The names of three potential referees who the College awards selection committee may contact directly.  Of the three referees at least one must be external to Massey University; at least one must be able to validate the international status of the research, and at least one should be able to validate the contribution the research makes within New Zealand.  (To be considered for the Massey University Research Medal – Individual, all three referees must be external to Massey University).  In addition the name of a fourth referee should be included in the nomination, who is from Massey University and who can validate the contribution the research makes to the institute.  The University level Awards Selection Committee may also choose to contact nominated referees;
  5. Evidence of involvement in international research collaborations;
  6. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee on the template provided, and
  7. Evidence of research excellence and impact.

Due to the diverse nature of the research activity, a range of research activities that demonstrate research excellence and impact will be considered when making the awards.  Examples include but are not limited to:

  • A significant discovery and the dissemination of new knowledge
  • A highly regarded research paper or similar piece of scholarship
  • A highly regarded artwork, design, or performance
  • The receipt of a major external research honour or award
  • The receipt of major research grants (as relevant to the discipline)
  • Research outputs that have been commercialized
  • Inclusion of artworks in significant national and international museum collections
  • The leadership of a successful research team
  • Contribution to an important research collaboration or linkage with an external organisation
  • Inclusion of artworks or performances in international festivals or biennales
  • Major public commissions
  • Findings taken up in policy or operationalised in community, industry or national/ international initiatives.

  4. The names of three potential referees who the College awards selection committee may contact directly. Of the three referees at least one must be external to Massey University; at least one must be able to validate the international status of the research, and at least one should be able to validate the contribution the research makes within New Zealand.  (To be considered for the Massey University Research Medal – Supervisor, all three referees must be external to Massey University).  In addition the name of a fourth referee should be included in the nomination, who is from Massey University and who can validate the contribution the research makes to the institute.  The University level Awards Selection Committee may also choose to contact nominated referees;
  5. Completed table of names of Masters and PhD candidates, the role nominee performed in the supervision of those students (for example Chief Supervisor, Second Supervisor, Statistical Consultant) and an estimation of the contribution the nominee has made to the thesis (i.e. 75%, 10%, etc.);
  6. Details of the students successfully supervised, their present appointments and any achievements they have made;
  7. Testimonials from five graduated students;
  8. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee on the template provided, and
  9. Evidence of research excellence and impact.

Due to the diverse nature of the research activity, a range of research activities that demonstrate research excellence will be considered when making the awards.  Examples include but are not limited to:

  • A list of research outputs, especially these in refereed  journals
  • A list of patents, contracts and their estimated value
  • A list of conference and other presentations at professional meetings
  • Any internal or external honours received by the nominee and nominee’s students
  • Referees’ or examiners’ reports which evaluate the quality of the students’ theses or supervision.

   College Research Award - Early Career

The College Research Award – Early Career recognises staff who have completed their PhDs (or equivalent) within the past seven years and who show research potential and leadership of the highest calibre.   One award may be granted annually to an outstanding early career researcher in each College. 

Each winner of a College Research Award – Early Career is nominated automatically for consideration for the Massey University Research Medal – Early Career.  One Medal may be awarded annually with an associated grant of $10,000.  In exceptional circumstances the Vice-Chancellor, upon recommendation from the University Awards Selection Committee, may award more than one Massey University Research Medal – Early Career in a year, each with a grant of $10,000.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominees should be permanent academic or research employees of Massey University;
  1. Nominees must have been appointed to their first fulltime academic or research appointment within seven years of first submission of the nomination;
  2. Nominees should have an excellent academic record, including an appropriate postgraduate qualification within seven years of first submission of the nomination;
  3. Notwithstanding the eligibility regulations above, staff members who are appointed at Associate Professor or above will be deemed to be ineligible for the purposes of this award, and
  4. A recipient may receive this award only once.

NOTE: Researchers who have experienced significant disruption to their early research careers due to family, health, career or other issues may still be eligible for nomination and should provide details of these disruptions in a statement attached to their nominations.  Eligibility will be at the discretion of awards selection committee.

Of the three referees at least one must be external to Massey University; at least one must be able to validate the international status of the research, and at least one should be able to validate the contribution the research makes within New Zealand.  (To be considered for the Massey University Research Medal – Early Career, all three referees must be external to Massey University.)  In addition the name of a fourth referee should be included in the nomination, who is from Massey University and who can validate the contribution the research makes to the institute.  The University level Awards Selection Committee may also choose to contact nominated referees;
